Puzzled by messages in error log

    • I have Joomla website, running 1.5.15. I have view and page caching enabled, as well as Joomla's SEF. The website is www.bear.org . I recently switched to a new template (Afterburner from Rockettheme), and have now noticed errors in the error log. None that are breaking the website, but ones I can't for the life of me figure out why they are happening.

The error is mostly this as it is the most popular page on the website:

[Wed Jan 20 07:54:12 2010] [error] [client 72.78.217.235] File does not exist: /home/nabc/public_html/website/visit-us, referer: www.bear.org/website/visit-us/lily-den-cam.html

Here is the issue. There is no referral to /home/nabc/public_html/website/visit-us at all in the code generated by Joomla, and of course it doesn't exist because it is a SEF generated URL and not an actual file. Visit Us is a top level menu that is in itself not clickable. It is an External Link in which I use either # or javascript:void(0) as the URL, only because that is the way Rockettheme handles non-clickable menu items with submenus. The error is appearing for these non-clickable menu items with submenus.

The error happens regardless of whether I use # or javascript:void(0). If I look at the code that Joomla sends to the browser, I can find no reference to just website/visit-us. There is always something else after it like website/visit-us/lily-den-cam.html

I have looked through the forum posts here, and at Joomla.org, and have not found anything quite similar. Does anyone have any idea why these errors are occurring?

We are getting 100K+ visits a day so the error log is completely flooded with these errors. Any help or insight would be appreciated as I am just tearing my hair out trying to find the cause.

      Thank you.

    • Hi Eric,

Just a quick question. Does the issue stop when the cache is disabled? Have you tried clearing/purging the cache?

      Thanks!

    • I have tried disabling view caching (in the global configuration), and that didn't stop the error. I can try disabling page caching (the system cache plugin) later tonight when the load drops. If I do it now at peak load it will overwhelm the server.

I have cleared the cache before and that doesn't seem to help either. I'll post back here tonight when I can disable the page caching.

      Thanks.

    • Load was down tonight, so I was able to do some testing. I turned off page caching. No change, I still got the error. I then kept page caching off, and turned off view caching. No change, the error still was there. I then turned of SEF, and I still had the errors.

So it isn't any of those that are causing the errors. This one has me stumped. I can't for the life of me figure out what is generating this error.

Any thoughts or ideas? Want to take a look at my setup?

      Thanks for the help.

    • Won't a redirect like that cause a redirect loop?

    • Shouldn't be a problem, i used to have a lot of 404s like that from aliases on one of my sites for tidal times that i had categorised around the world, i simply fixed it using the seo component i had installed and redirectoring the directory stub that had the 404 error to the menu item that it was aliased too.
