Gantry causing slow response and not responding problems

  • Gantry causing slow response and not responding problems

Posted 13 years 2 months ago
    • Whenever I go to the template manager and click on a Rocket Theme style to edit it, It starts to display the Gantry framework and then everything locks up and my browser ( Firefox ) becomes unresponsive. This goes on for about 30 - 45 seconds and then it will finally load gantry and everything is fine. Once it finally loads switching between tabs and saving edits works fine. But if I close the Gantry style editor and then try to go back into it everything locks up again. This is very annoying and I'm never quite sure if my browser is going to respond again or lock up completely.

Is anyone else having this problem and do you have a solution?

    • Hi, I'm having the exact same problems and have tried using different templates (clarion, enigma etc). I'm sure it was working fine at one point... maybe it was after the gantry upgrade but couldn't swear to it.

Gantry is an extremely reliable component, that's why all of our demo site templates, starting with the December 2009 Reaction, run Gantry.
As I offered to the OP, Could you please create a Super Admin login for me and PM it to me so that I can a look.

    • I had no issues navigating the Template Manager on your site.
Could you start up your Firefox(I'm on 10.0.2) in Safe Mode. I'm wondering if an Add-On might be doing this.

    • Hi Dan,
I tried what youi suggested and had some interesting results. Here is my set up and the tests I ran. Each test consisted of just bringing up the default RT template (and then closing it).

      FF ver. 10.0.2

      Add-Ons:
      Firebug
      Web Developer Tools
      ColorZilla
      LastPass
      PixlGrabr

      Test 1 - ALL add-ons disabled
      Attempt 1 - OK
      Attempt 2 - OK
      Attempt 3 - bad (25 secs)
      Attempt 4 - OK
      Attempt 5 - bad (25 secs)

Test 2 - ALL add-ons disabled (except Firebug) + Firebug ACTIVE
      Attempt 1 - OK
      Attempt 2 - OK
      Attempt 3 - OK
      Attempt 4 - OK
      Attempt 5 - OK

      Test 3 - ALL add-ons ENABLED + Firebug ACTIVE
      Attempt 1 - OK
      Attempt 2 - OK
      Attempt 3 - OK
      Attempt 4 - OK
      Attempt 5 - OK

Test 1 - ALL add-ons disabled again (repeat of test 1)
      Attempt 1 - bad (25 secs)
      Attempt 2 - OK
      Attempt 3 - bad (25 secs)
      Attempt 4 - bad (25 secs)
      Attempt 5 - bad (25 secs)

      Conclusion :
Does not appear to be add--on related.
It seems as if some action or setting is sparodically being left on / off? in gantry causing the delay.
Having Firebug active always corrects the issue.

nb. when the bad result happens the rt-template screen is show as normal but is locked up for about 25 seconds (very consistant delay) so not a server issue I would think?

      Thanks for looking at this.
      Cheers,
      Brent

    • I re-started Firefox in Safe Mode and the issue still persists. Watching the Console in FIrebug it looks like it's getting hung up on "mootools-core.js (line 478)". It's a POST Method that returns a status of 200 OK but a time of 40.37s.

I switched over to Chrome and the same POST returns a time of 396ms.

So everything is working fine in Chrome but with Firefox it takes forever and hangs even in Safe Mode with everything disabled. So it must be an issue with Firefox and mootools maybe. It's not my server at least. Any ideas on a fix for Firefox? For now I'll just use Chrome when doing style / template changes.

    • I have the same problem. Modulus j16 works great. The new Modulus, however, has eternal load times in FireFox, both front and back end. In Chrome it is lightning fast. I have reverted to Modulus j16 as default for now, since anyone using FireFox cannot reasonably navigate the site.

What is the latest with this?

[EDIT] Everything seems to be working OK now. I'm not sure what it was, but after a while the loading times came down and now the site loads fine on all browsers on different computers. [/EDIT]
