Gantry returning XML error for all templates on a site

I have a site built around Joomla! 1.6.1. Whenever I try to enter Gantry for a RocketTheme template through the Styles manager, I get a blank page with the following error:
XML error: junk after document element at line 84
And I cannot modify my templates in any way. Does anyone have an idea for a fix? The site involved is www.cwcmaine.com , for reference.

Henning,
Unfortunately, we are not sure if we dare upgrade that site, since it cannot be performed automatically through the back end, and we are concerned that the site will break if we manually upgrade to the latest version. Do you have any idea how such an upgrade will work?

Best is to take a back up and try to work on the back up first.
Could be tricky to start from 1.6 ... so many things changed ... but 1.6 is absolutely unsecure and you will probably get hacked soon ...
