add css class to split menu url

I'm trying to add a css class to the split menu item (external url) but it doesn't seem to get added. I'm doing it in link type options... Firebug doesn't report the class being added anywhere.
Is there a way to hardcore this somewhere? Can't seem to find the location of the file which renders the <li>'s
