I have to override the mainbody layout for one menu point and it works absolute correctly.
BUT after saving the new values, for example 4:3:3:2, closing gantry and reopening it, mainbody simply is SHOWN as 1 Position (12), but obviously the overriding value 4:3:3:2 are used correctly.
Problem ist that I cannot check out after a while the right values defined for the mainbody position because it is always shown as "1".

The 1 just means that you are using that for the default menu-item.
You need to click on "positions: 4" to see the layout you are using.
The settings you have for positions 1, 2, and 3 don't inherit to in what you have for positions: 4.

Thanks Henning,
but I do not understand that!
I have ONE Link A under which the mainbody position should be in
2 Positions
mb|sa (9:3).
That is why define those values in an template override for Assigment of link A.
So how can I find out several weeks later which values (2 Positions, mb|sa, 9:3) I defined in the past when this combination is not shown at once? Without knowing the value "2" positions?
The other positions behave in a way you expect but not mainbody position.
Or do I miss anything?

... well you know where you have modules published.
Lets take an example:
you have only one template-style: The Master style.
You have 3 pages.
1. MENUITEM-A (default menu-item). It has 1 module published in sidebar-a.
You need to click on "Positions: 2" in the layout options to see the layout setting
or to adjust the layout.
2. MENUITEM-B It has no modules published in sidebar.
3. MENUITEM-C /default menu-item). It has 1 module published in sidebar-a
and 1 in in sidebar-b
You need to click on "Positions: 3" in the layout options to see the layout setting
or to adjust the layout.
So you have all settings (mb+sa, mb, mb+sa+sb) in only one template style!
There is no need to create an override for MENUITEM-C.
When you enter the layout settings it will show "Positions: 2" because its the setting of the default menu item.
So why does Gantry have the concept of multiple settings?
1. Modules can be displayed based on ACL-settings. The layout needs to take care of that.
2. Gantry can render code in module positions via features.
