error_log at 470MB. Safe to delete?

- I noticed this morning that /templates/rt_gantry_j16/error_log is at nearly 470MB... I am now excluding it from backups to save on weight, but is it safe to delete this?

- It is safe to delete it but I would wonder why it grew so large in a first place?

I asked a guy from MyJoomla about it (he was helping us with some site stuff anyway) and his response was:
"That large error log is due to your template attempting to use JRequest without ensuring that class is available."
He fixed it, cleared it, and the error_log is now 522B. MUCH better...

The template was custom built by our agency, and Gantry version is 4.1.4.
I see 4.1.9 is the latest... I'd upgrade it but it always breaks our custom-built calendar. Not typically a huge deal, but does cost us some bucks every time we have to have it fixed.
