Gantry won't load after update from Joomla 2.5.9 to 3.1

I'm prototyping a move from Joomla 2.5.9 to 3.1. After the conversion (through Joomla Update) Gantry won't load (Server error). I've tried:flushing all the caches, using both IE and Chrome, uninstalling Gantry and reinstalling the latest Rockettheme template with no difference.
If I start with a new install of Joomla 3.1 everything work okay. Any ideas?

I was away for the holiday and wanted to finish my testing before I replied.
I have tried updating from Joomla 2.5.9 to 3.1.5 with Kirigami + Gantry installed and not installed. In the case where the Rockettheme template is installed and in the case where I install the Rockettheme template after the update to Joomla 3.1.5 I get the same message. Gantry won't load and the message:The website encountered an error while retrieving region5oa.org/regiontest2/administrator/...e&layout=edit&id=127 . It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
Error code: 500
The Rockettheme template is not currently the default template - I simply want to load gantry and set the settings for my webpage.
As I have mentioned before I have installed a new version of Joomla 3.1.5 and then installed the Rockettheme template and it works okay.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

- I re-verified a clean install of Joomla 3.1.5 and then installing the Rockettheme template and that works okay. Gantry loads perfectly.

I just noticed that there was a new version of Joomla, 2.5.14. When I updated the system from 2.5.9 to 2.5.14 and then upgraded to 3.1.5 everything works okay. The rockettheme template now works.
This seems to be a Joomla problem and not related to Rockettheme.
With your initial suggestion I checked my previous 3.1.5 update test site and found that there was a Joomla error with one of the classes when I tried using the "Find Updates" button under the extension manager.
I appreciate the suggestion.
