SOLVED RT templates blank - no styling

Hi there
I ahd a huge struggle with J3 and updating the Gantry and RT stuff - the updater did not want to work.
So ihave reverted to re-installing Joomla 2.5 and the installs went well and I can access the templates in the backend (which I could not do in J3)
Now - when I make a RT template the default theme, I get a unstyled page.
This happened on 2 sites with fresh Joomla installs.
Could someopne please check what could be the issue?

The solution was that the css-compiled folder in the template folder was not writable

My host need to get with the times. Pronto. Apache2handler is from the devil.
