Is it safe to install gantry 5 on existing website with cygnet template?

    • Hi,

my website has the cygnet template installed with Gantry 4.1.29. Is it safe to upgrade to the new version of the framework?

      Kind regards

      Mel

    • I would not do this. Whilst Gantry 4 and Gantry 5 can exisit alongside each other they are two very different things. Each requiring their own template specifically written for the framework. Also, there is no "upgrade" path. Gantry 5 is not backwards compatible with Gantry4 templates. Also, Gantry 5/Callisto installs new menus as well as the template and makes both of them default - so if this is a production site it would be unwise to do this.

So, I recommend that you set up a test site clone of your existing site and do your testing therein. Also, create yourself a local rocketlauncher copy of Callisto so you can get familiar with Gantry5 before you attempt to change your production site.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Hi Mark,

thanks for responding. For now I will stay with gantry 4 on this site.

Will there eventually be a way of upgrading in the future? Will not moving to Gantry 5 mean that in future we wont be able to use certain modules like the rocksprocket etc. because they will only be updated to work with gantry 5?

I shall try the callisto as you suggested to see what its like.

      Once again thanks

    • There isn't, and will not be, a way to get a Gantry 4 template to work in Gantry 5. There is no backwards compatibility. But, You can use roksprocket and any other module you like in Gantry 5 - in fact the Callisto demo has several roksprockets on the home page. Callisto Gantry 5 tempalte also does include a "Gantry 4" preset that contains many of the module positions you are already familiar with to make it easier for you to migrate your content from a Gantry 4 template to a Gantry 5 one.

Give Callisto and Gantry 5 a try - it is different but also much more powerful.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Hi Mark,

thanks for response. I am trying it as we speak :)

It looks great, will need to spend a while reading up on how to work with it though as it is a little different.

    • Yep, read all the documentation on Gantry 5 and Callisto. There's a lot of work gone into the documentation so it should help you a lot. Of course, we're here in the forum if you need to ask any specific question too.

      Regards, Mark.
