Upgraded and messed up my site

Posted 9 years 6 months ago
    • I was using the Ionosphere template and I just downloaded the Callisto template with the Gantry 5 and rocket launcher. When I installed everything, my current website got all messed up. I went in and deleted the template and also tried to disable the Gantry 5 stuff. So, what have I done? What is the best way for me to migrate my ionosphere template to tbhe new one? Here's a link to my website in the it's current state. I'm going to go back and have it restored shortly and then I can start over again. Ayn input would be appreciated.

    • Whilst Gantry 5 and Gantry 4 can co-exist with their respective templates it is unqise to make such a radical change on a production site as you have discovered. Gantry 5 is not backwards compatible with Gantry 4 templates. When you install a Gantry 5 template is will also install a new menu and make that and the template both the default. So, In your case I suspect that you just need to make your original menu home item the "default" again and also make your Gantry 4 template the default again. This shoud reinstate your site as it was.

When performing a migration such as this it is best to clone your site to a development area and get it all working there first.

If you need more help, Please would you post your URL, superuser id and pswd in the secure tab of your post and i'll have a look for you.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Mark, thank you very much. I'll included the login info. How do I clone the site and move it to another area to work on it?

    • I just get "unable to connect to LDAP server" when I try to log into admin.

To clone a site use Akeeba backup and Akeeba kickstart - see the Akeeba site for more details.

    • Awesome. Thank you.

So, what is the best way for me to upgrade my site to use the new Gantry 5 and the Castillo template? I have my site backed up. Do I install it into a new directory and then work on it from there? Do I need to make a new database. Or, should I do a new clean install of Joomla into a new directory and then install Gantry 5 and the new template and start from scratch? I would like to be able to just convert my old site, but I'm a little confused about how to do that. I feel like I would mess up the MYSQL database or am I wrong here.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

    • "clone your site" means - backup your existing production site with akeeba backup, then you'll need a brand new empty directory somewhere with a brand new and empty database in which you can use akeeba kickstart to create your "clone" (copy) of your production site . You do all the work on that until you get everything working as you like, then you can backup that working test clone site version, empty the directory and database on your production site and then use akeeba kickstart again to clone your working test site to the production site.

      Mark,
When you use Akeeba Kickstart to clone your working test site to the production site, do you populate the now empty but old database or do you use the new database you set up for the test cloned site?
      Thanks

    • When you have your testing site all working as you wish then you backup that site with Akeeba backup. Then you backup your production site again (just in case) and then empty your production database and production joomla root directory. Then you can use Akeeba kickstart with the backup you took of your test site to create the production site again (it's a clone of your test site then). Please read the Akeeba kickstart documentation on their site.

      Regards, Mark.
