Making the Switch: Joomla to Wordpress in Gantry 5
Posted 9 years 1 month ago
Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about making the switch from Joomla! to WordPress. My current website uses Joomla! 3.4 with Gantry 5. What I'm considering doing is switching the CMS system to WordPress, but keeping my RocketTheme template and particle content.
I'm sure I would have to install the Wordpress-specific template, but given this, is there an easy way to maintain the layouts and particles I've already set up, or maybe some shortcuts that would help migrate the website faster? (gantry configuration files, template config/layout files, etc).

Anything that interacts with a WordPress Widget, either via a Widget Particle or a Position Particle, will have to be manually rebuilt... said the Joomla way, anything with a standard Module... but a lot of stuff lives/is-written-to your []b]theme/custom/[/b] folder and can be easily ported... see here:

Thanks for the link. I copied everything in my Joomla! rt_salient/custom/ folder to the new Wordpress site, which is using Hydrogen for now (just testing Wordpress before buying a new membership). It looks like some of the layouts transferred over, but most things appear to be broken. In Joomla, I only had 3 pages which were built almost exclusively using custom Particle content and RokGallery Images. Right now, none of the content appears, and the titles for each layout are only using numbers (like "24") instead of the original name (like "Home").
When I assign one of these layouts to a menu item, every module position has an error statement saying "Missing content: 'animatedblock' particle cannot be found.". If I try to edit my existing particles from the Wordpress backend, I get a 404 Particle Not Found error.
Is there something else I needed to migrate or copy over to make this transfer correctly?

I definitely wouldn't be mucking with it on Hydrogen like that... I'd imagine there are plenty of variables that aren't going to match up
Install Salient FIRST, then I would transfer everything over per the tutorial link

Ok, thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate the help. So it sounds like switching between Gantry templates isn't as straight-forward as switching platforms while using the same template/theme?
Or is Hydrogen just missing a lot of the variables that the paid templates have? Just trying to understand the in's and out's of migrating before I start the process.

Themes are very different is all I'm saying... I'm not a developer... but I certainly wouldn't think moving Salient config files into a Hydrogen install would fair very well. I've never attempted the migration you're trying but G5 is very platform independent and it seems reasonable that moving some config files within the SAME theme would work fairly well
Salient is definitely going to have Outlines, Sections, Particles, and a ton of SCSS within it that Hydrogen doesn't have pre-configured which is why I think trying it the way you are currently isn't the best course
