Sorry, but you've gone past peak complexity

    • With Gantry 5, the complexity and difficulty of working with this framework has gone beyond what a reasonably competent web developer (me) wants to deal with. Articles, modules, positions I can handle. But now there are particles, containers, outlines, overrides which behave in a completely new way. There's a point at which the great results just take too much trial and error or searching through forums or examples to produce the results.

For example, I tried to work out where the main text for the Topaz theme ("Create a professional website") was located to see how I can add a "Read more" to another part of my site. I gave up. It's in an article somewhere but then trying to find the outline and particle that uses it and where the "Read more" is ticked, I have no idea. It seems I need to follow the whole trail from article to module to position to outline to container to particle. Maybe. I gave up.

The point is, the framework produces some great results but to deliver those results the amount of effort required to produce a one-off website is just too great. The complexity is enormous and has gone beyond what you could reasonably expect of anyone who isn't a full-time RocketTheme web developer.

    • There's no doubt that that Gantry 5 has a learning curve to go through but that's like anything that is new. But, we've produced a lot of documentation on Gantry 5 here http://docs.gantry.org/gantry5/ And also we produce template documentation to show you where to find everything too http://www.rockettheme.com/docs/joomla/templates/topaz/demo.md#recommended-extensions . The specific information you seek can be found here http://www.rockettheme.com/docs/joomla/templates/topaz/demo_navigation.md#header-main . I've also attached a screenshot of the article for you.

Gantry 5 is an extremely popular framework and has been extremely well received by the community. Even those members that initially had the same impression as yourself have come back to us after a little more perseverance to tell us that they were wrong and now love Gantry 5. So, honestly, it is worth sticking with it.

Also, if you want to just stick with module positions, module and articles then you can in Gantry 5. You don't have to use particles if you don't want to. Also, "overrides" have always been there too (certainly in Gantry 4) so this is nothing new, but again you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

I encourage you to read the documentation and watch the videos therein too. Also load a rocketlauncher copy of the template since this will give you an exact replica of the demo to study too.

      Regards, Mark.
