Best Practices - Upgrading RocketLauncher and Gantry

Posted 14 years 8 months ago
    • Greetings everyone,
I am a long time developer here and as I make my 4th site that is based on Gantry and maybe my 15th site that was originally based on a Rocket Launcher install, I find myself updating more and more. I am a very security concerned and functionality concerned individual, so I genuinly make every attempt to keep every website I make up to date with the latest version of Joomla, RL template, Gantry, extensions etc.

So I have the following questions:
      1. What is, hands down, the best way to update to a new template release when I start a site off with Rocket Launcher?
Currently I just upload the changed files. I don't replace the .ini because I do not want to lose my settings. But what if part of the update is a new .ini to support some new feature of Gantry for example?

      2. What is, hands down, the best way to update to a new version of Gantry?
Again my fear is losing setting changes I have made.

Just curious to see how everyone goes about it. I always just FTP up the changed files, never the whole package on top of what I have. I want to be able to do this efficiently for all my sites and never risk losing a setting or customization.

    • Using a differencing utility to compare your site files with the current release is a good way to determine what has changed. Many of the compare tools allow you to make "package" which contains the files that have changes and then upload the contents of that package. Since you always want to make a backup of your site before changes you can use your local backup to do the compare. :)

Thank you Joe, that is a wonderful suggestion. Can you recommend a utility for a Windows user?

    • A good open source tool is Winmerge. I use it on my windows computer
A good pay tool is Beyond Compare. They have a 30 day trial. Great feature set on this one.

    • hi dan,

just to add to what has already been said:

      1. for template updates overwrite the files which you havent changed and use winmerge etc to update the files where you have made costumizations as described in the link than jem posted.

      2. for gantry: if you have version 2.5.x or 3.0.x installed all you need to do is
      get the gantry_joomla_framework-x.x.x.zip from here:
      code.google.com/p/gantry-framework/downloads/list
and install it through your joomla admin > extensions > install/uninstall...

it is not necessary to uninstall first. if you find your template parameters broken next time you open them after an update, just refresh your screen and they will be fine. during the update you will not loose any of your settings.

      kat :)

I'm new here, but I thought I'd throw in my agreement with Joe's recommendation for Beyond Compare, by Scooter Software. http://www.scootersoftware.com/index.php I love open source tools, but I'm more than happy to pay for Beyond Compare. It is embarrassingly good, especially for the price. Well worth the money.
