Problem with layout for logged in vs logged out

Posted 14 years 3 months ago
    • Got an interesting issue I can't figure out.

Using a Rocket Theme template, and based on whether a user is logged in or logged out, sidebar a, which should ONLY be displayed next to the main body of text will get moved around.

When a user is logged in, sidebar a stays on the right hand side properly.

But when a user is logged out, the sidebar moves to the bottom of the screen, below the body of content.

I should note that I'm not using the latest version of Gantry, using: Gantry v3.0.12. I didn't want to upgrade yet because the last time I did, things got screwy and I had to revert back. But I did check the release notes and didn't see any details suggesting an error like mine existed.

That being said, not entirely it's Gantry related. Could be related to the theme I'm using (Dominion), but my sense is that it has something to do with the framework.

You can see an example here:

    • Hey there,

I noticed that you were able to create a profile and log in. Did that work? can you see the difference?

    • No, I didn't do anything. Could you please create one for me so I don't need to register?

    • OK, I just PMed you.

FYI - I tried adjusting the gantry css. Didn't work. I also tried removing modules in sidebar A to see if something specific was causing it. Didn't seem to change anything.

    • I see the problem. When I validate your site here , there are a lot of errors, mainly caused by the improper html tags in your articles or the modules there, not the template. Could you please check? Missing a closing tag such as </div> can cause this issue.

    • Hey thanks!
By sure luck I was able to find the one that caused it on the 1st pass. The issue was specific to the template, but that's because I added in additional code for traffic tracking and such.

That is a alot of errors... I think alot of the extensions I'm using have some clean up to do...

Not sure about that, could you please explain more what additional code and the extensions that caused the issue?

    • It was code related to Javascript tracking used from ad services. I found some things I wasn't using anymore and just removed it. That seemed to have been the problem.

I had put the code directly in the the HTML file, and it's likely that was breaking the HTML formatting. I'm unclear why the the issue only existed for unregistered users, but it could be because once you are registered, the tracking code isn't able to track you anymore.

    • I am having a similar problem with the Hybrid theme in Wordpress. Except the Sidebar is below the content rather than on the side regardless of whether someone is logged in or not.

I've looked everywhere for a missing </div> or other incorrect code but cannot find anything wrong. I even restored my revisions to a date when the sidebar was working properly, but that did not fix the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I will PM you my site if you think it will be helpful. But I don't want my poor programming related to my site to come up in a Google search.
