- I don't suppose that there is an easier way to force a sidebar background color to be the same height as the content pane other than using a 'faux column' technique is there?

look at templates like Hybrid etc. they use display table and a different mainbody layout.
You could also use j script for this like this

- I like the David Walsh solution. In fact I ran across this several months ago (subscribed to his RSS), don't know why I didn't remember. So what is the correct method for including JS files so that it survives an upgrade? index.php?
