Layouts Tab won't save settings

  • Layouts Tab won't save settings

    • Hi,

I'm baffled by a behavior I'm getting with the Layouts Tab. I'm trying to build a template from scratch using the Gantry 4.0.4 template with no Demo data.

What I'm running into is trying to replicate the demo sites layout positions/configuration (I have another install that has the demo data installed I use as a reference).

Every time I adjust the module positions, save, close the template manager and then go back, all the settings are reverted back to the default. I even tried to make an override that ONLY adjusted one single position (Changing Showcase from 4 positions to 1). Save, close, come back in and it reverts back! I'm getting really frustrated! Anyone have any ideas? Yes, I've checked system setting and everything is set to writable.

    • Hi there,

Do you mean that the changes do not appear at the front of the site when relevant modules are published to positions? Or do you mean that when you go back to layouts they have changed back?

If the latter then this is because the default display is based on published modules for Home Page. Obviously we could not show every page combination as a default so we have opted for the Home page.

In effect, if you click 3 above a slider you are telling the template that when it has a page with 3 modules published then it should use the layout saved on the slider. You could do this with any number of modules from 1 to 6 and each setting is stored ready for when you click on Apply or Save & Close.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Hi David,

      > Or do you mean that when you go back to layouts they have changed back?

Yes. I was actually going through and setting the layout with no modules made yet. The primary one I cannot get to "stay" is the mainbody and the sidebars. I'm trying to set it up as per the demo template with {SBa Main SBb} and no matter what I do it reverts back to {Main SBa SBb} -on the *back end*. Why won't it allow me to keep this setting?

Is it because I don't have content published to SBa and SBb? That just seems an odd behavior? Why wouldn't it just save the pre-set regardless if there was or wasn't content associated to it yet?

Thanks for helping me understand this better!

    • Hi Michael,

It should save regardless as what you are doing is telling the template to save that combination for use when there are modules published in sidebars a and b.

Can you PM me with a temporary Super Admin access please and I will take a look to see what the cause may be. Please include the link to this post for ease of reference.

      Thanks :)

    • Hi David,

I was about to PM you, but then I went back and made one last attempt by clearing every cache I could think of and still, when I set the positions, it would still revert to a MainBody with NO Sidebars. So out of curiosity, I *did* then go publish a dummy article and a module to SBa and SBb. And low and behold, all of a sudden it all snapped into place. So I went to look at the layout tab and *it* all of a sudden was configured correctly!

So, what I surmise is, a best practice should be at minimum if you are working on layout before you have content, is to make dummy modules and articles to fill the space as Gantry seems to want to ignore the layout settings if nothing exists to fill the space? I think the other layout positions exhibit similar behavior too. I'll go do a test to see on various rows that do or don't have content, but certainly something the developers should check.

I currently have the entire collection of all the Joomla 2.5 templates set up as dummy sites so i can access the admin and view all the parameters when setting up a site from scratch. This lets me not have to install the demo content and as I build the site up I typically go in and set the layout identical to the demo site. Then once I have my new site built up in a similar fashion, I'll go in and make tweaks to what's where. I've never seen this behavior before... I'm guessing it is mostly likely related to the responsive aspect built into Gantry 4 now... at least that's where I would start investigating first as to this behavior. It's not really a bug or issue in my opinion, as long as it's simply documented somewhere that this will happen. I spent last evening going through every single Gantry documentation page and saw nothing about this, so perhaps it's just something that should be added in various places to make people aware?

Thank you though for your support!

    • Hi,

I'm having the same issue i.e. it is not saving layout for header position, whenever i change "Header Position" to 2, and click Save, after page refresh, it come back to "1". I tried several times, applied several things by adding / deleting dummy widgets and data, nothing worked. I am using Reaction theme in wordpress. I've tested the same scenario and same theme for joomla but it worked fine there so apparently gantry is having issue with wordpress.

Please help me solve this issue and let me know if you need login credentials. I'll send you in pm.

      Thanks

    • Hi Fakhar,

It is no good posting Wordpress problems in the Joomla forums. The Wordpress mods don't often come here :cheesy:

Please start a new thread in the Wordpress forum for Reaction theme.

      Thank you.
