SOLVED Strange Image linking issues no one has been able to solve

Posted 9 years 10 months ago
    • Hello,
FOR SECURITY REASONS ALL URLS WILL BE PROVIDED VIA THE SECURE TAB.

      Hello,
we are working on a site that was migrated from J1.5 to J3.+
The live site can be seen here: (link via Private tab)

However, we noticed almost from the start that the images on the site will dissapear very frequently.

To continue testing for this issues, we are working here: (link via Private tab)
This website is built on a Joomla/Gantry combo.

And the image issues we are having with it, can be better illustrated on this page:
      (link via Private tab)
The problems we find: images missing on and off: (this happens in other areas of the site as well, but this a page where the problem presents itself more often than not. See images)
      (link via Private tab)
      (link via Private tab)

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU VISIT THE SITE AND SEE THE IMAGES ON THE PAGE, PLEASE REFRESH THE CACHE A FEW TIMES, AND YOU WILL MOST CERTAINLY SEE THEM GONE AT SOME POINT.)

      What we have tried:
Check all directories and images are present and that directories and files have correct permissions.
Check all url paths. With a few exceptions, the paths have been correct.

Thinking this was probably related to the site being (initially) hosted on shared host account, as suggested by some developers and the host manager, we decided to move the site to a VPS account. That did not help.

Some have noted a possible plugin order conflict, but I do not know what to do in this regard, (which plugin should go first???) Just in case, I disabled Rokbooster. (Sometimes it breaks my sites if it is not set perfectly for the website environment). No change.

We have been trying to find a solution for this for a few of months now, but nobody that has been involved in this project has been able to provide sound advise as to how to fix this, or what is the cause.

I have been helped on this forum multiple times. Even on cases where, as in this one, NOBODY else has been able to help us.
This website is in the last phase of developement and I am really hoping somebody here will have the suggestions or solutions that will allow us to close this project, for good.

Many thanks for looking into this.

      Kind regards.
      Beatriz M.

    • for your images instead of using urls like this:
      images/stories/screenshot%20part%202%20addressing%20the%20health%20needs.png

      change them to:
      /images/stories/screenshot%20part%202%20addressing%20the%20health%20needs.png

note leading slash on the front - then it works.

btw - it's not a good idea to have spaces in the image names either - you might want to change those too.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Thank you Mr T.
We saw that too, and we tried to fix by adding the slash too, (forgot to mention), but, even thouh, that seems to solve the problem, it comes back, every time, at one point or another.

I was also cautioned as to not try to add the slash just indiscriminatively. I was told this could cause more troble if we were having the problem coming back.

      Is this correct?
Even if it is not, the problem persists.
I want to add that this problem did not exist in the Joomla 1.5 version, which irks my clients. ("Isn't J3 suppossed to be better"?)

These are some of the responses from the host manager:
      "Hello,

I have checked and noticed that the broken image links are appearing only on certain menus. I have tried to troubleshoot the issue but I am afraid that I was not able to. I would like to suggest contacting the Joomla support team for more accurate information on the issue"
      ANOTHER ONE:

      "Hello,
I was able to reproduce the error in question and trace it. It is most probably caused by an outdated component or module, so my best advice is to update Joomla and all installed plugins/modules/templates/extensions.

All extensions and Joomla core are up to date.

Can you provide an insight as to what is going on?

      Many thansk,
      Beatriz

    • Please give me one example where you have added the leading slash and the image does not show so I can check for you. You do need to add the leading slash - that is your issue. I don't know who told you not to add the leading slash but they're not correct you would only need to worry about that if your site was in a subfolder (which it isn't).

If it re-occurs then perhaps it is your editor dropping the leading slash again when you edit the article? I can think of no other reason why if you add the leading slash that it would disappear again from your articles?

You should alway maintain every extension, joomla and template at latest versions - the latest versions always contain the latest bug fixes.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Gladly Mr. T!
A good example will be Footer-e where you can see a number of social media icons.
I have added the slash before a number of times to those icons and every time, they work once, and then, it stops working!!!??? I just checked the back, and the slash is still there, yet, in the front, the slash is missing and no images are visible. (Remember, this happens off and On, so please, refdresh that page a few times, IT WILL HAPPEN, THE IMAGES WILL DISAPPEAR.)

Same with the banners on some of the pages (Maintop-a), the logos, the images in the copyright positions in this and other pages (URL Ex. #1) (Secure tab) dissapear more often than not.

I was able to keep the logo from dissapearing on the website were we are testing this issues (URLEx. #2), but I have no idea what combination of factors I got present on this site that are not on the live one, I did my best to repeat the exact changes that might have something to do with this specific case, yet, the logo still dissapears.

      Attaching screenshots as example.

      Kind Regards!

    • Ok so my observations:

      1. as you screenshot showed you has one link without the leading slash on the image so I corrected this
      2. You had system page cache enabled - you should not use this on a site that has dynamic content - so I diable dit and cleared server cache.
      3. You had settings in rokbooster to compress images I turned this off.

Now I have refreshed the page numerous times and the leading slash always shows and the images always work.

      Do you have other examples?

      Regards, Mark.

    • Mr T.

Since all the main cases in the test site (private) and the live site are related, let me take a few hours to go trough the test site again ad see if that helped in all, or most cases, or if I still need to add the slash in any other case.
If I must still add the slash, my question is:

would adding the slash glabally, with a Find and Replace would do the trick?

By the sound of it, I think you just added another one to your checkmark bag.

Many, many thanks. This sounds amazing so far.

      Will be back.

      regards,
      Beatriz

    • You can't do a find and replace across all articles and modules? You could only do that within one module or one article.

    • I am a bit confused, are you asking me if I can't?
If ye, then, Yes, I can do a find and replace.
I was asking if this would be a correct way to do so, or if this would work in all instances with images.

    • I am saying there if no facility to do a find/replace acros all your article/modules with one command. You have to go into each individually and change them - yes within one module or one article you can do find replace to deal with multiple instances within that one article/module. You just can't do one command across the whole site.

You need to look at each of your article and modules and add the leading slash in any IMG tags (where the image is in the image directory off the joomla root directory).
