I want to change the text for the 404 message, but can't find where they have been written.

Try looking in [JOOMLA-ROOT]\templates\rt_templateName\layouts\_error.yaml

Ok - I can work with that. Does that mean that a multilingual site has to have it's own yaml documet? And how will this be picked up by the language? - Adi

So in my discussion with the devs they pointed out that Joomla does not know how to use a 404 custom page created for a language. As for as Joomla is concerned ONE 404 page is all you get
However it seems somebody has discovered a clever work-around for this limitation. See " 404 custom page in multilingual site " -
