The dropdown direction only works for "simple" layout - it will not work when you move to multi-column extended layout, it's not intended to work like that.

Posted 8 years 10 months ago- This was been fixed (implemented in 5.2.16) on the main language (in the italian template override) in which it works properly. Why do not works in the same manner in the other template override?

Gantry is now v5.3.1 - please raise a ticket on Gantry 5 github project if you believe this to be wrong. I've asked before and this is the answer I shared with you.
