    SOLVED Is Gantry 4 dead?

Posted 9 years 2 weeks ago
    • I've got Gantry 5 on one website but it's actually more time to set up than Gantry 4, so just wondering if Gantry 4 has an end of life date yet ..

      Cheers

      I shouldn't think so as we've recently released a new Gantry 4 framework version -> 4.1.31.
Although we're not producing Gantry 4 templates anymore Gantry 4 is still a very viable product.

As for the setup time I've found that spending time with Gantry 5 has enabled me to prototype a clients site much quicker than Gantry 4 did. There's so much code I don't have to write anymore and the module position width is so much easier to set in 5 versus 4.

    • Hi

I share the same opinion like damo about G5 templates.
ATM it takes more time and it's more complicated to setup G5 based website than G4 one.
Maybe in time Ill get better grasp on G5, but atm Im still more "at home" with G4 than with G5

      Regards

    • Stick to G5 I say. It reduced the time to develop sites by 50% for me.
It integrates so much better with all kinds of stuff like scripts and frameworks.
Surely it takes that moment until it "clicks" and it all make sense.
Looking back at G4 I think: "How could I work with such a limited thing".

    • I just setup a multi-lingual site in Gantry 5 and I had a 40% time savings over Gantry 4 as I avoided writing a lot CSS code instead just choosing the styling parameters I needed from a Dropdown box.

I also wrote a comprehensive guide on Gantry 4's slider layout for module positioning and Gantry 5's Drag & Drop is far superior to the Gantry 4 method.

    • I should have asked the question better ...

is there an end of life date for Gantry 4 or will it remain supported?

And seeing as I'm asking, will the likes of RokSproket continue to be supported ...

    • It's a good question Damo.
I'm very worried as we have made so many sites using G4, will updates stop at some point, forcing us on to G5 for security reasons ?

We cannot use Gantry5 as most of our (non-technical) clients want to maintain their own sites.
If I am baffled by it, they have zero chance of understanding it I'm afraid.

    • My understanding is that G4 will be maintained as as people ask for it.
But I will ask the devs about it.

Gantry 5 isn't finished – awesoem features are on the roadmap. But just as a little remark. For example in G4 we had really complicated chunks of custom html-modules.
Those have been replaced by particles wich have a really nice user-interface.
At the end it's up to you wich features of G5 you use or not. You can use as it as any other Joomla template: One outline just and positions. It's up to you.

    • I've used Gantry 5 but the truth is, I'd not want to start a new project with it.

Gantry 4 is more than enough for me and with the RocketTheme extensions, it does everythign I need and much more.

I can see why Gantry 5 is been developed and how it will fit in with Grav and how Joomla wil become a distant memory in a couple of years and I'm one of those wanting a script to migrate from Joomla .. but until it much less complex, I need Gantry 4.
