SOLVED Layout or Recompile CSS spin hang

Specific configure options no longer open and I am unclear how to proceed. Here are the steps:
1. Control Panel - Components - Gantry 5 Themes
4. Configure - select Xenon theme
5. Select Layout, or Recompile CSS
6. Either gets a spinning circle...
How can I debug or resolve this? A log to check or other method? I have full access to the hosting account. Any help or suggestions appreciated.
Joomla 3.6.2
Gantry 5.3.5 (latest as of this post)
Xenon 1.2.2 (latest as of this post)
RSFirewall 2.11.2
Other extensions installed e.g. DocMan
Rochen hosting
OS Linux s
PHP 5.5.38
MySQLi 5.6.33

I don't get to the admin screen another "protected area" login comes up first and the password does not work on that page?

The JSON strings returned by the AJAX calls that Gantry 5 is making are being prematurely curtailed. So, this is either a timeout issue on your server (in which case ask your host to increase the timeout limits) or a mod_security issue (ask you host to check the security logs to see if the AJAX calls are being blocked and then to change the mod_security rules to permit these).
