SOLVED how to update Font Awesome in Gantry 5

Posted 4 years 2 months ago
    • Hi all, I'm running the Helium template on Gantry 5.4.36. The included FontAwesome is version 4.7.0. However, I need some icons added in the FA 5 package.

Is there a recommended procedure to updgrade FA inside Gantry from 4.7 to 5?

      Wordpress 5.5.3, PHP 7.4

    • It's not really recommended. When Gantry 5.5 is released (not until joomla 4 is released) it will include FA5.

      Until then...

    • Hi Mark, thanks for the quick reply. My client doesn't want to use the CDN, everything is self-hosted, so the linked article doesn't really help me.

Guess I'll just wait til Gantry 5.5. Until then, since right now I really only need a couple of icons from the new set, I'm going to try this little workaround I found on FA's Github: github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/wiki/Customize-Font-Awesome

    • Huh? then just load your own local copy of fontawesome then, you're not compelled to use it from a CDN (although I would as it will be much faster).

You'll be waiting a very long time for G5.5 as every time Joomla get anywhere close to releasing Joomla 4 they change their mind again and push the released date back (it's already a couple of years overdue).

    • I wasn't sure how to download and integrate Font Awesome 5 within the Gantry Framework without breaking the existing FA 4? Other forum posts I read (admittedly regarding older Gantry versions) strongly advised against using both on the same install, and I'm not sure if updating Gantry 5 would break my changes?

    • As I said, not recommended. But they can both be used on the same site, that's what my tutorial does. Just understand that fa5 won't show up in font picker in Gantry 5 - you have to code the required html yourself. AS I said you can use a local copy of fa5 (loading it locally instead of via CDN) - the CDN solution is much faster than loading from your own server which is why I adopted that method.

Yeah that's also a problem, because we would want the icons available in the Icon Picker. For the few cases we have now the javascript workaround will probably be faster, though I might try a full FA5 install if requirements change.

      Thanks again for your help!

    • You could also just carry on using fa4.7, pick any icon, and then use CSS to swap out the icon with a png image.

    • I also considered that option, but as this icon will go in a row of icons on a menu that are all css-styled FA icons in different contexts, I didn't want to have to make a graphic file to fit every possible size and context. I'd rather the styling all be uniform.

    • Not sure why you think you would need to do that? the png could scale up and down to fit...

But ok. Good luck with your solution.
