    SOLVED interactive maps

Posted 4 years 3 months ago
    • A customer asks me to add an interactive map to their RT website. I searched the internet for a Joomla-compatible component but couldn't find one. The customer would like to record his tours and indicate them with a link (that pointed over a dedicated article).

I found this Javascript project ( https://github.com/Leaflet/Leaflet )which is also published on GitHub. But it seems very complicated to implement and I have great compatibility concerns with the framework from Gantry.
Does anyone here have any experience with it and maybe suggest such a component?

    • Why not just use google maps? Look at their "my maps" facility.

    • Yes MrT; that was I thought about initially. But then, the fact of having to set the different points on the customer's account (which I should use or be shared with), upload and keep the respective links updated, the uploading googles scripts without knowing exactly how they work, the giving to google the use and the management of all navigation data (with all the implications on the privacy laws), have made me desist.
I think that in recent years google has developed a management (in all his areas) interface that is too bureaucratic and articulated; often incomprehensible under the logical aspect. Sometimes I think that they deliberately developed these incomprehensible interfaces in order to make forced and artificial contacts.
I don't want to depend on a company that treats users like numbers.
      I do not trust.
This is just my thought, developed by helping and managing for many clients (in years and in different and many areas of Google Apps) due to slow and often useless support that Google has delegated to outside companies.

I prefer an integrated component which, at most, uses external maps.

    • You’re basically going to have two choices: Apple maps or Google maps. Then, on top of that you might find extensions to make things a little easier, but that’s about it... all of them will cost you money. Look on JED.

    • I will follow your advice and provide an overview of what is suggested among the joomla.org extensions. As you suggested, I will definitely buy something professional (with a good versions experience and an assistance) as I will be using it on multiple clients. I evaluate in this moment a 5-stars solution that cost € 108. I will look if exist a testing corner...

    • Is asking whether someone has had negative or positive experiences (with regard to gantry5 and the RT templates) with a particular product is compatible with the rules of this forum?

I can't find in other forums and faq areas comments in this regard.

    • Very thanks MrT for your willingness!

In these days I have been reviewing all the solutions that are available in the Joomla extensions which, as you have already written, are related to the Google and Apple maps apps. What I found, as most professional and well supported, seems to be this:

      compojoom.com/joomla-extensions/hotspots

But it's also very invasive; all three core Joomla parts are installed: plugin, component and module. Since I'm going to build it into a published website, I wanted to have any hints from previous experiences with Gantry5 and the RT templates (Citadel template).

If there were any real hands-on examples, maybe have the link to take a look at how it behaves. I would like to avoid those problems which, such as compromising the joomla core database, can make a site unstable even after the component has been uninstalled.

    • I'm not familiar with that product at all. It's using googlemaps (as I predicted, as there are only the two choices really, Google or Apple). Any third-party extension you use is going to install plugin, component and module - I don't really see why you see that as being invasive? To me that's just normal.

It looks a professional extension, my only question would be why are the testimonials on their site no later than 2013? (perhaps they've just not updated it).

I've leave this topic open so other can comment (although I do doubt that anyone else will offer comments as I said earlier).

    • I set up a testing website and started delving into what would seem to be the most used and best rated maps component on the joomla.org extensions site. I installed the core component and was following the work arround indicated on their support when I crashed (again!) in the google API Key pages. Here is a total confusion on how to set up and create the api key for this project. Also the help steps of the component (as the testimonials) seems aren't upgraded to the latest google procedures.

To make this component work, as I imagine all similar listed on the joomla extensions page, in addition to the component purchase, it's must be considered the purchase of the calls that google requires for this API! This is a very considerable cost that dependent only from the data released by the company itself.

These type of maps components aren't what I am looking for.
