Thanks for the update. Yes, this is what I meant by "cost you money" - it's not just the purchase prive of an extension, it's the ongoing cost that google or apple hit you with for every transaction. But, realistically, I doubt you will find an alternate solution that doesn't use either google maps or apple maps - they have the market sewn up.
The only other alternative that I've ever used is just to use an image (hand draw you own basic map) and then use image mapping (hotspots) on the image to do mouseover effects (tooltip or modal) on the image itself. But, I have to say drawing your own maps and then marking hotspots on the image is a tedious and sometimes complex activity (even if you do use an online tool to do it e.g. https://www.image-map.net/ ).

- In JED there are several map extensions based on open street. Some may also be fine although I notice little experience and few comments.
