SOLVED WP/Gantry Menu corrupted & template assignments

Posted 3 years 11 months ago
    • This is really frustrating. I have created a mainmenu in Appearance > Menus. I found this thread and followed it by deleting the mainmenu.yaml file and letting Gantry re-created it. Disaster! In the attached image, you can see that it use the same menu item TWICE and added a URL link menu for calendar. I am so familiar with Gantry having standardized on it for all my clients website under the Joomla framework for almost 10 years. But some of my clients like the WordPress for creating posts so I decided to migrate a site using Gantry but it doesn't work very well.

      Any ideas?

    • Once you delete the mainmenu.yaml and then go to Gantry 5 menu editor and just press save on that menu name then it should recreate the mainmenu.yaml correctly. If it doesn't (which is what you appear to be saying) then I'd need to look.

Please would you post your URL, admin id and pswd in the secure tab of your post and I'll have a look for you.

Please post your FTP logon, password and FTP URL in the secure area of your post.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Mark,

Not sure why but it did re-create the menu the 2nd time I did it. Thanks.

However, I am still having an issue getting the 'Home' template to display and I have the Assignments set to Page Context 'Front Page'and 'Home Page' as well as the 'Home' menu link and, as a test, 'History of OCHS Band'. FYI, the 'Home' template does display on the 'History of OCHS Band' page but the 'Mydefault' template is used on the 'Home' menu link and the Logo link. The Logo is linked to https://ochsbands.info/index.php which should be the 'Home Page'. The OCHS Bands page uses the 'Mydefault' template but 'Mybands' template is assigned to that menu link.

I put a H1 tag at the top of each template so it would let me know which template it is actually using.

I've created an administrator account for you in case you want to take a look.

Here is the 'Home' template menu assignments.

    • Errr you are going completely over the top with the assignments. I've corrected it all now and it works.

I know you are used to Joomla and this is what may have thrown you when moving to Wordpress so It's important to understand the main differences:

      1. Unlike in Joomla, the "base outline" is the default outline itself that is directly used by all the pages/posts/archive/and any taxonomy unless you specifically assign another outline. So you don't need a "mydefault" outline at all - just change the "base outline" to do what you need.

      2. Unlike in Joomla, there is nothing to stop you "assigning" multiple outlines to items - but you should never do that since the "first" that matches the criterion will be used. So, you must be careful about assigning an outline and only use the bear minimum assignment to achieve what you want. Assigning, menu, post, front page, taxonomy, archive, page, all at the same time is not required and in fact incorrect as it can lead to ambiguity too.

Take a look at what I've done and it should be clear now.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Mark,

Thanks for the 'clear' explanation on the differences. I would recommend that there be a 'Differences in Joomla vs WordPress' on the Gantry.org website as well as an 'Assignments' explanation on each template documentation. I can read but I'm terrible at reading between the lines. :)
