SOLVED Attempting to Change Website Theme

    • I have a website which has used the Notio theme. I wanted to update it to a newer template. I decided I would do it locally by setting up the website using WampServer 3.2.3. I first downloaded the database. Locally, I imported the .sql file into a database with the same name as was on the host server. I then installed Joomla locally. I found that I could see all articles came over. I then installed extensions to again duplicate what I had on the host server including installing the Notio theme. When I went to view the website locally I saw the template was without all the changes I had made on the hosting site via theme layout. I really didn't want to go through setting up all the various components of the layout again, so I went searching for another way. I attempted to use Akeeba Backup to backup hosting website. I then went to restore locally and it seemed to go well but when I attempted to open frontend or backend I got a connection error and got a blank page.
In investigating more ( docs.gantry.org/gantry5/tutorials/moving-between-themes ) I saw that if I wanted to move to a new theme I needed to look at the ID number of theme and copied the .yaml files into the config/9/ folder. Still when I open the frontend or go to the layout of the theme it shows the various components (sample text, photos) that come with the theme when you first install. One final thing is the local server is running Windows and my hosting service uses Linux.
Any suggestions, help would be appreciated.

    • Use Akeeba backup to make a backup file. Use Akeeba kickstart and that backup file on an empty directory on your local server to restore the clone of the site. Make sure that you are using the same PHP version as your production site locally.

    • My first problem was I was attempting restore into a directory already with joomla installed, so I started with an empty directory. Went through the process using Kickstart Pro (subscribed to Akeeba Pro). When all was done I still got the error: ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED. On the hosting service PHP 7.4 (ea-php74). On local server PHP is 7.4.26. Seems there is no way with hosting service and Wampserver to match up. All hosting service php end with (ea-php7x).

    • Ok, well I can't help if I can't see it. I do this a hundred times a day and never had any issues.

You do need an empty database and empty directory.

Can you access the backend of the site locally? If you can clear cache in admin.

      Regards, Mark.

    • I'm not sure what it was with Wampserver that I couldn't get it to work. I then decided to try xampp, went through the process, and everything works fine. Thanks for your help. I guess I'll be using xampp from now on. I'm now trying to figure out how, if possible, to use a new theme without having to recreate the various layout items. I thought moving the custom settings would do this, but doesn't look like that did the trick.
