SOLVED Switching to New Template - 2 Questions

    • I have a website that I wanted to update to a newer theme, i.e. going from Natio to Horizon for example. I decided I would work on it locally and then restore to live server after completing update. Where I get stuck is if there is an easier way to move to the template without having to start from scratch with layout and particles having to be inputed again. I see that some of the particles are different (Horizon - Slideshow A - slideshow-a, Notio - News Slider- newslider). I've been seeing about moving particles from one template to another ( docs.gantry.org/gantry5/tutorials/copying-particles ) and wondered if that is a solution or are the templates too different.

Which brings me to my second question - using JCE Editor Pro it is very easy to create a link to another article. When I'm in the layout - Particle Items and go to link to the article I've found the only way to do so is to: index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=55 for example. This means going back and looking at the articles, finding the id number and putting it in. I know this may seem like a minor deal but when having to build the site over again it can become a time consuming effort.

I'm not the most experienced website developer but I do my best. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have to say over the few years I've used Rocketthemes, it is easier to get the lay of the land using the layout to work on the sites.

    • 1. No, there's no easy way - If you have placed particles directly on the layout of your outline then you effectively have to start over with the new template. Sometimes if you have used "module position" particles on the layout and then created Gantry 5 particle modules assigned to that position then that can make it easier. Don't forget though that different templates have different particles in them (or at least different versions of them).

      2. For the articles, just create hidden menu items to them then you can use the SEF url for that menu item. You want to do that anyway since you you want to open that article in a specific menu item (and therefore outline) under your control. You could just add &itemid=123 to your urls but it's far easier to just use a sef url menu item.

      Regards, Mark.
