    Menu Ordering Issue

Posted 8 years 6 months ago
    • Sometimes when I reorder the menu in the Joomla Menu Manager, the menu in Gantry 5 does not change and so the seen menu remains as in G5. This is an issue, as we do not give clients access to G5. Has this issue been seen by others? Is there any fix?

    • So disappointed that this is still an issue - https://github.com/gantry/gantry5/issues/552 - after more than a year.

In the issue tracker, a Gantry Framework member says that "our focus right now is Grav + Gantry." (Aug 24). Not sure I get that at all. I would think your focus would be on the loyal (paying) RT members whose focus is mainly on Joomla or WordPress + Gantry. Our priority surely isn't Grav. Many of us are struggling mightily (and apparently too silently as one coment on the issue says that "As there have not been too many complaints on this, I've left the issue alone.") to stay with Gantry 5 where others are bailing left and right.

On client-edited sites, most of us don't want to expose them to the Gantry 5 configuration. So suggesting that we not use the core menu manager just isn't acceptable for these sites.

    • webjo - we have a small development team and priorities do change. In fact, the priority was changed to addressing "inheritance" which is now part of Gantry 5 because members wanted us to address this. Gantry 5 is an opensource project and is FREE, nobody is paying for that. Many people (not just our developers) contribute to the Gantry 5 project.

Our priority right now is GRAV and Gantry 5 (having completed the "inheritance" project) and we're actively working on this and testing now. This will be for the benefit of RT customers aince our Gantry 5 templates will be available on the GRAV platform too.

I suggest that you add your comments in the Github ticket since this is where our developers will see them and be able to respond directly to you.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Thanks Mark. Can any of the RT templates be used on Joomla without Gantry? Can we use any of the templates that have been developed over the last year+ without Gantry 5? If not, then in a sense RT customers certainly are paying for Gantry 5's development. Unless I"m missing something. And I'm not clear on how Grav development is a material benefit to a Joomla template customer.

I love RocketTheme and have been with you since 2009. And I think Gantry 5 is great. Understanding how to use particles in the module manager was key to being able to use it on sites that clients will manage. Unfortunately that's where the bugs I've found surfaced (menu sorting, no editor in text fields, ACL issues). These issues can make or break our decision to use Gantry 5 on a site or not (that's clear from so many commnts on the forums), but have been around for more than a year. Inheritance seems like a great feature to improve the speed of building a site, but I doubt anyone chose to walk away from Gantry 5 for the lack of that feature alone.

I get that the development team is small. My concern is how priorities are set. Even if a particular bug isn't getting thousands of comments, I would think the team would recognize that a bug that impedes usability should have priority over new features, that's all.

    • Ask the question the other way around... Do you have to use an RT template to use Gantry 5... No you don't, there are two FREE template for Gantry 5 Hydrogen and Helium, also you can develop your own template. I didn't say that a GRAV template was a "...material benefit to Joomla Template customer.." what is said was "This will be for the benefit of RT customers since our Gantry 5 templates will be available on the GRAV platform too" - i.e. When Gantry 5 is updated to work with GRAV too RT customers will have choice of CMS platform and will be able to get the same look with our template without using Joomla at all (if they choose to do so).

Whilst I appreciate that long-time Joomla users will prefer to use modules, that's not the only way to use Gantry 5, You can just use the particles on the layout themselves and you can use Gantry 5 inheritance to share particles, sections, etc amongst your pages. If you adopt this approach then transitioning between CMSs is much easier (i.e. you can use Wordpress, Joomla, and soon GRAV) in a virtually identical way and not have to worry too much about understanding the CMS itself.

Inheritance was previously the biggest bugbear our members had about Gantry 5, so we listened and spent several months addressing this and now it's the most lauded feature of Gantry 5. It is also actually quite true that some members did walk away from Gantry 5 because of the lack of inheritance.. but now they're back and producing great sites with Gantry 5.

I also we don't have any bugs receiving "thousands of comments" - if there was a real issue stopping sites working then of course we prioritise fixes for those, but the menu example your cited is not one of those.

It would be great to have unlimited resources, every bug fixed, and to be able to have every feature that everyone wants immediately, but in the real world, priorities change, and resources are limited, so we can't please everyone all of the time.

I encourage you to join in the debate with our developers and the rest of the community on github chat https://gitter.im/gantry/gantry5 .
