Custom page menu item missing

Experiencing a strange issue and not sure if it is related to just upgrading to J3.9.2 on a site I am upgrading from a previous Gantry 4 template.
Now when I try to put a custom layout onto a menu item, when I choose Gantry 5, in this site the template style dropdown flashes up briefly and then it disappears. Therefore I cannot assign a custom layout to any menu item cause the option to select one is vanished.
Am using the latest G5, .27 from Dec 2018 and have error reporting set to maximum with nothing showing. I uninstalled all previous Gantry 4 instances and no updates present on clearing all caches. PHP is 7.2 and the template is Kraken but that doesn't seem to be the issue.
Anyone got any ideas?
