Using webp images and specifying alternate formats in header

    • I'm using Gantry 5 on Joomla. I really want to be able to use the webp image format for header background images because it cuts image sizes nearly in half without loss of quality, but it isn't supported by iphones.

Is there a way via custom stylesheet to specify the alternate images?

If not, perhaps a feature request that provides the ability within Gantry to do so?!?

    • Using webp images is a bad idea at this point in time. As you've seen they are not universally supported and creating all the different images can be onerous.

Yes, you can swap out an image with a replacement image using custom CSS and media queries. If it's just the odd fixed image you want to swap out it's reasonably straightforward. However, when you start talking about slideshows it can get a lot more complex and you might then choose to create a particle override and alter the YAML, TWIG and SCSS to achieve what you want.
