    How usefull are particels ?

    Posted 1 year 2 months ago
    • i ask myself for what reason do i have a joomla installation, if i have to place all my content into those bling bling boxes to get a fancy design....

      for example:

      from Home Particles > Sidefeature > Content Tabs > Content Tabs Item

      looks like:
      <div class="g-infolist">
          <div class="g-infolist-item g-infolist-with-img">
              <div class="g-infolist-item-img g-block size-22 hidden-phone"> <img src="gantry-theme://4/images/.jpg>" alt="image"> </div>
              <div class="g-infolist-item-text g-block size-68">
                  <div class="g-infolist-item-title"> <a href="http://docs.gantry.org"><span>Introduce yourself to the new and powerful Gantry 5 Framework</span></a> </div>
                  <div class="g-infolist-item-desc"> <span>Gantry benefits from an extensive, and ever expanding, catalog of online and freely available documentation covering basic to <span class="hidden-tablet">more </span>advanced topics.</span>
                  </div>
              </div>
          </div>
          <div class="g-infolist-item g-infolist-with-img">
              <div class="g-infolist-item-img g-block size-22 hidden-phone"> <img src="g" alt="image"> </div>
              <div class="g-infolist-item-text g-block size-68">
                  <div class="g-infolist-item-title"> <a href="https://www.rockettheme.com/docs"><span>Theme specific help guides to assist in setup and configuration</span></a> </div>
                  <div class="g-infolist-item-desc"> <span class="visible-desktop">The RocketTheme site provides free documentation for all our themes and plugins, to supplement understanding of their various features and capabilities.</span>
                  <span class="visible-tablet visible-phone">The RocketTheme site provides free documentation for all our themes and plugins, to supplement understanding.</span>
                  </div>
              </div>
          </div>
      </div>

      May i ask, where i can connect this to joomla ? Because if i have to put alle the stuff in here by hand to get a decent desgin, it makes no sense to have a joomla installation.

      Where can i add joomla articels ?

      or do i miss something ?

    • Some particles have the option to use joomla as the datasource whilst other only allow the data to be sourced from the particle itself. You didn’t say what template you are using so hard to comment specifically on infolist particle (there are several versions in different templates).

    • Sorry missed the template in question..

      The template is Callisto and those particles don't have the option to use a joomla datasource.
      But it's the same issue with all other template with particles in use. I have only see a few with the use of an external joomla source.

      So the particles make no sense for me. Because if i have to put everything in by hand, updating this stuff will be a pain in the a.....
      We all use Joomla for an easy content management as possible ... with this kind of desgin you start to do the opposite.
      if this site grows, you'll loose track of your content!

    • Callisto is the first Gantry 5 template, as such it has very few Joomla datasource particles.

      If you are constructing a site for yourself to maintain then it is just as easy to have the datasource as the particle itself and “paint” the whole outline layout with the content (so what you see is fairly wysiwyg unlike the abstracted way your assemble page content in Joomla). On the other hand, if you want a client to update their own content then I understand why you just want to keep them to updating article (and not go in gantry 5 admin). I do that with my own clients and use particles that can read Joomla articles (such as contentarray, latestnews, swiper, etc).

      You can also let clients edit Joomla module content too. To that end, you can have a particle in a gantry 5 particle module too.

      Particles are very useful because they are much easier to write than having to code in PHP for modules. So you can give your clients access to particles that you develop yourself that lay their content out exactly as they wish.

      So, Gantry 5 caters for both workflows. You can put all content in particles or you can put all content in the CMS. It depends on your require, and who will be maintaining the content.
