    • Enable SEF.

      Basic Core SEF:

If joomla is in the root; htdocs, or public_html...

In Global Configurations, Search Engine Friendly URLs Yes, Use Apache mod_rewrite Yes, Add suffix to URLs No.

      Change htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

If it’s in a folder, you need to change the # RewriteBase / to reflect the path of your site.

      Change:

      # RewriteBase /

      to:

RewriteBase /(the name of the folder joomla is in)

If that doesn't work, search or post here:

      forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=544

If you are using a 3rd part component, contact the developer.

It wont work until you rename htaccess.txt file to .htaccess.

      Change htaccess.txt to .htaccess.
and when I refresh my page I get this...
      Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, admin@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Do you know what the problem is?

    • Not sure how you renamed your .htaccess file, but there should NOT be a period at the end of the name, just the beginning:

      .htaccess

Can you double check that and see if that's the issue?

    • Is the site in the root or a subfolder?

Also, check the contents of the file you renamed and make sure you renamed the correct file.
