Which would work better for my site, Joomla! or Drupal?

    • Hi there,

I'm really debating with myself here, need a little help and maybe some suggestions from the pros here. I run an online gaming site, it's averaging around 40,000 hits a day at the moment. Currently, I'm using Joomla! 1.5, however, I have recently been considering switching to Drupal. I'm not entirely sure which would be the best option, so I've come to seek a little help.

As I said, my site averages about 40,000 hits per day, and that is forecast to increase over the next year, rather dramatically. I expect to probably reach double my current daily hits, by the end of this year. My site is a very social site, many people use it purely as a social network in itself. However, the content that is mainly served are games, MMORPGs, and mini browser games.

What do you guys think? Which would be the best option, Joomla! or Drupal? And why do you think that?

I know there is a lot about this topic already, but I feel that in my case, I need some extra clarification on what would suite me best.

      Thanks!

    • I'm not too familiar with Drupal, but IMHO it really comes down to what CMS you are familiar and comfortable working with and if that CMS has the ability to fulfill he requirements of the site you are trying to create.

If you need some type of social network component for your site, does Drupal offer the same type of social components such as Community Builder or JomSocial?

If you need a gallery, a download component, or customized contact forms, etc. are there enough Drupal extensions to create the site you envision?

Joomla & Drupal are both solid platforms so it really boils down to which one you can easily create and maintain your site with.

    • Well I've used Drupal rather a lot in the past, and I've been using Joomla for my current site for about six months.

Many people seem to suggest that Drupal may be the better way to go, because it's supposedly more fit for developers. I would have definitely given Drupal a shot if RocketTheme had already released the Dominion template for Drupal. Sadly it's not available for Drupal yet, so I suppose I'm going to have to wait a little while to try it out.

Some people tell me Drupal is also more stable than Joomla, how accurate is this statement?

I suggests doing some searches for 'drupal vs. joomla' and see what you find.

Lots of info out there to help you make your choices.

If you are a coder, maybe Drupal is the way to go because getting something simple like a gallery component to work requires combining (from what I have read) the feature of several components, whereas with Joomla, you can go to the JED and take your pick from several components (mostly free) that will suit your needs out of the box.

[A lot of what you will find is a bit slanted towards Drupal vs. Joomla because many of the sites are Drupal sites... :) ]

In any case, it really depends on your level of expertise, what you need and want, and how you plan to achieve the desired result.

In my case, I use Joomla because it can do exactly what I want, i.e., I can grab various components, install them and be done with it. I haven't played around with Drupal too much, but if I have to start writing code for something I could do in Joomla (for free or at a nominal cost) really why bother?

    • Thanks for your help JEM, I looked at those links, and they certainly do provide me with a lot of useful information!

I would move to Drupal instantly, my only problem right now is theming a Drupal site. I would absolutely LOVE to use the Joomla Dominion theme on my Drupal site. Would it be possible for me to convert the Rockettheme Joomla Dominion theme to a Drupal theme?

    • You can make any site "look like" you want by simply using the graphics from any template. The only thing I would consider is which extensions are available for Drupal and just how much coding experience do you have to pull it off.

You may find you'd have to sacrifice some of the functionality by switching because a certain module/extension isn't available for Drupal. You will also sacrifice the time and effort it takes to learn an entirely new system. The means downtime for your site. Is it worth the risk?

Frankly, if you have a Joomla site and it is "comfortably" serving it's purpose, why fix it when it isn't broken?

    • I've used Drupal quite a bit before, and I know my way around it quite well. :) I'd be happy to stay with Joomla, but at the moment, it really isn't suiting my needs. I'm looking to build a community too, and from many opinions - Drupal is the CMS to choose, if you wish to build a community as well.

I would just really like to use Dominion on Drupal.

    • I purchased Artisteer exactly one month before I became a member here. I thought it would be useful in helping me learn how things were put together and give me a way to determine which CMS I would ultimately end up with for my own site. While Artisteer has been useful, I've learned much more at RT. That being stated, I took a look at the difference between a SIMPLE Joomla Template and an identical one exported to Drupal this morning.

You say you have a good grasp on coding for Drupal. At first glance, it doesn't appear there would be a great deal of difficulty in transferring a layout or graphics from one system to the other. I say that with a bit of hesitation however, since I don't know the Drupal system.

Other than that, it seems you've already made up your mind and you just need to convert your site. I've been dabbling with the idea of now learning Drupal and I will follow with interest how you proceed.

I am also most interested in seeing if/when RT comes up with something similar to Gantry for Drupal. The preceding statement is probably a testament to my lack of knowledge, I fear. I'm thinking of taking a tax deduction this year for my membership fees and calling it "tuition." LOL!

      Good luck to you.

    • Thank you Carol. :)

I've decided to take to Drupal, and I'm currently building my new site on the platform. A lot of people say that Joomla exceeds Drupal's capabilities, but for a social site and a dynamic site such as mine, both the core features and modules of Drupal really fit in nicely. I love the way Drupal runs, and am please that I've switched. :D

I'd definitely recommend it to anybody who is looking to design a social community. Thanks for your help guys!
