Hello,
I am confused on how to update Joomla. I recently went from 1.5.8 to 1.5.18. I transferred about 1,800 individual files via FTP.
Now I am reading that you can simply unzip the Joomla update and just move the files and folders over...thus overwriting everything else. Or upload the zip file and unzip right on the server...
Did I just waste a bunch of time?

Always back up your site before updating.

Usually what I do is back up the site, upload the upgrade to a folder in the root (I have a folder named 'upgrades')
Then through my host's CP, I just extract the contents of the latest upgrade (from the 'upgrade' folder) to the root, overwriting the existing files.
It's much faster than downloading the upgrade, extracting it, and then using an FTP client to upload all the files. - Thanks,

I noticed that folders in the upgrade do not contain the files that the old folders contain....
For example, the folder in the upgrade may only contain 3 files but the one it is replacing may have 10 files. It is ok to overwrite those? Are those extra files not needed?

- The upgrades contain only changed files, when you overwrite a folder and the upgrade has 3 files and the original has 10, the three files are overwritten and the other 7 are left intact.

Ohhh...I thought the folder with the 3 files would REPLACE the original folder with 10 files if I overwrote it...Thus just leaving the folder with just the 3 files.
So you are saying that it will just replace the 3 files upgraded in the folder with 10 and keep all 10?
Ok, that would have saved me a lot of time!

Yes, that is correct.
After you backup your site before upgrading (as Joomla suggests), it should take about 3 minutes to upgrade the site as described in one of my previous posts.

Same principal as if you have a folder on your desktop named 'Work' with Documents 1, 2 and 3 and and a folder on your USB drive named 'Work' with Documents 1-10.
When you drag the folder onto the USB drive, it will ask you if you want to replace the folder and contents, you click on 'Yes' and Documents 1, 2 and 3 are over written but Documents 4-10 will still be there, they don't get erased or deleted.
Anyway, try that method next time...
