    Super Duper weather page?

Posted 18 years 1 month ago
    • Hi,

As part of my first Joomla site I'm planning a "super-duper" weather page--not only current conditions, but a forecast, marine conditions, flying conditions for aviators, dark sky prediction, sunrise/sunset, tide predictions, etc etc. Visuals and maps will be a big feature.

Has anyone done anything like this? I'd love a hint as to good sites to draw from, how to access and format data, what Joomla tools to use.

These doesn't seem top be much in the way of RSS once you get beyond the basic wweather info--please tell me that I'm wrong!

Any ideas on how to proceed?

      Hey there,

Yes, went through the Extensions page and lots else--did I miss something? What I didn't see there was much beyond the usual temp, cloudy/sunny sort of thing.

What I need is info on ocean conditions, flying conditions, tides, (heck, surfing conditions), etc.

I'm finding a bit here and a bit there on various government web pages but no RSS feeds...

The Weather Underground has some great stuff but youcan't tell where they are getting it from by looking at the source code...

      Nice page, thanks.

Maybe that is the answer--go with a series of links and text grabbed from variosu sources.

Looks like a whole lot of work just to identify sources of info--no big deal, just didn't want to reinvent the wheel.

      Thanks!

    • It a once stop weather site for everyone, no way could we keep this updated without using a lot of the feeds. During the Hurricane season we post information on the site, but during off seasons we just let the feeds do the work.

Oh, I agree! I defintely want it to be on autopilot in the end!

I'm hoping (I'm going through pages now) that the various maps, etc will have a standard link that points to the current map and isn't unique to each day--I can just bring in graphics that way. If nothing else I can just warp certain pages via link, though that isn't my first choice...

    • For Weather... check out HamWeather.com. Not Joomla, but they have a great weather product. It's free if you can figure out the code.

Very cool. I spent some time with it--might be too complicated (i.e. time suck) at this point for me, though.
