I'm planning on adding forum software to my site and I need advice on which one. I've installed and played with SMF, phpbb, Vanilla, and a few others--I think I just need a little guidance from more experienced people.
The most important things to me (that are not normal forum requirements) are:
1) Easy for computer newbies to participate. No codes, etc.
2) It must be VERY easy to upload a photo (it's a photo-oriented site). Assume user hasn't a clue what "ftp" or "pathname" might mean. An "open" dialog box would be great, drag and drop would be super cool, iPhoto?Aperture?Picassa/Flickr integration...well...I would just pass out!
3) I really would like only one comment "space" on my site--it would be so nice to have the comments that appear at the end of each article in Joomla to be part of the Forum--so there is only one comment space/comment community. I saw an add-on for Vanilla (very much a beta) which created a new thread in the forum for each Joomla content item. Something like that.
4) Easy for me for me to administer (I plan to put most of my effort into generation content!).
#3 (Joomla article comments go into forum automatically) is the one I was least sure about. Could you point me to the bridge software or extension that I would need so I can check it out?
I have used phpBB and Simple Machines Forum. I started with phpBB, but I much prefer SMF. I can't say there is much difference in terms of ease of use--both are pretty easy. I much prefer the SMF Admin interface.
Just to add--my forum users much preferred SMF when I converted it from phpBB to SMF. This is an art oriented forum, so the ease with which photos were displayed is important. Although, it could be different now, when I made the transition, SMF was much easier for adding photos. Just click on more options and hit that browse button to the local computer, select, then upload.
Is the Joomlahacks bridge the right one to go with?
(And here's another question, since the Joomlahacks bridge is a Joomla/SMF/CB Bridge: Google as I might, read through Joomopolis as I might, visit the Community Builder site as I might--I still can't figure out what Community Builder is and why I would want it. Any thoughts or sites that make good--and obvious!--use of CB?)
There has been debate and discussion here about SMF/Joomla bridges.
I personally have not used a SMF/Joomla bridge, as I don't need to use one. I will say that having worked with bridges between forums and galleries, don't be surprised to find glitches.
darinb....I have used both SMF and JSMF bridge and can honestly say I've been very pleased with them both. They're easy to install and seem to blend well CB too.
O.K., I installed SMF and the Joomlahack bridge. Followed the instructions exactly--all seemed well.
But it doesn't seem to do anything. Do I understand correctly that the idea is that when I log into Joomla it should log me into SMF, too? Do I have to have already registered in SMF first?
I've been playing with it for a couple of hours with no progress. Checked out the support board for the bridge and they seem a little hostile to lowly newbies so I'm asking here!
Once I get this working I want to do the discussbot--and that will be all I want functionality-wise from the bridge.
