Anyone know how to use an image protection method with slimbox?

  • Anyone know how to use an image protection method with slimbox?

Posted 18 years 3 weeks ago
    • I am trying to use either the no right click javascript or the blank.gif img src over top of the image to protect my images that come up in the slimbox. I have the disable right click on images code placed into my template index.php, and it works on all of the pictures on my site, however, any pictures that popup in the lightbox are not protected with this. I assume it is because the slimbox is a javascript that is being called externally, and somehow that cancels out the no right click javascript code in my template. So does anyone knowhow I can add this code to the slimbox.js file to make right click disabled in the slimbox image popup, or how I could place a blank.gif over top of the image since the image is already set as the background? Just looking for a little bit of image theft deterence:) So if anyone has any idea how to get either of these to work with the slikmbox, please let me know:)

      Thank you,
      David Henderson

    • It is difficult to prevent theft - users can just do a screengrab.

My suggestion, do not put large, high res images in a public place if you do want them stolen, just use smaller low res images (I did that for an Artists site (my mom).

Sorry I can't be of much help mate.

      Cheers!

I know you can't completely prevent image theft, and putting them in a protected area is out of the question. These are pictures we want the public to see, they are not however, pictures that we want our competitors to just copy and use on their pages for selling those items that we personally took pictures of. We have quite a bit of time and money involved in our pictures, setting up the studio room in the office, the lighting, the 2 thousand dollar camera and so on. So we get a little upset when we see someone on like ebay using our pictures to sell the products!LOL So I am just looking to deter them a bit..make it a little bit more work that "right-click, save as.." You wouldn't believe how many people DO NOT know about print screen and pasting the page into an image editor and cropping out the image you want. I know there is no way to stop that, but A LOT of people do not even think of it. Anyways, I have 2 different styles of coding the blank.gif method into a page to secure your image. One is using tables, the other is divs. So, hopefully if I spend a few more hours tinkering with this, I may get it right eventually! If anyone has any advice for me that may save me a few minutes, or better yet, a few hours, please, please, please speak up:) Or if you have an idea that I may not have tried yet, I am all ears!

Thank you for taking the time to read my problem,

      P.S.
You do logos don't you Roland? I sent off 2 images to a graphic artist for what I wanted the logo to look like, and what he gave me is not what I was picturing!LOL I basically gave him a layout, then gave him a picture of sort of a font that I wanted the lettering to be in, and he didn't come anywhere near close, so if you don't mind, I'd like to send you the images and see if you think you may be able to do it? Willing to pay a bit:)

    • unfortunately with the developer toolbars for IE and FF it's easy just to disable javascript then right-click and save the images as per usual.

    • Sorry I can't help William, but would love to hear the solution if you get one. A little deterrence is better than none at all IMO.

Simple fix: Watermark them with some unobtrusive text or a logo......If you have many images you could also batch watermark them in various programs.......

Just 2 cents for what it's worth.... javascripted methods really are not much of a deterrent.....but if you make the images unusable to a thief I think that is more of a deterrent....and may be "easier" to implement also.....

    • Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

    • If you notice, I am not only using the javascript method, but also trying to implement the blank.gif overlayed image method. If they disable the javascript, when they save the image...they get a blank.gif instead:) I know I can't stop 100% of the copying, but honestly...at least 70% of the competitors we are trying to stop are not smart enough to even use firefox or a webdeveloper toolbar. They also won't think to screen shot. So I am content with stopping 70%, the other 30% we can find and send a nasty letter from our lawyer to. We have all the source files for our images, so can prove they are ours:) We just don't have the time to go after all of them, so if we can deter the ignorant ones, that's good enough for us. As for watermarks, we used to do that...but now we feel that we do not want to lower the quality of our images with a watermark across them. If we place the watermark in a nonobtrusive area of the photo, then it can just be cropped or stamped out. So we decided not to do that anymore. So trust me, I know all of the things that can be done to circumvent these methods, and I know that the only way to truly protect an image is not to put it on the web in the first place. However, I am content to know that I will be stopping at least half of the people with my methods, and that the other half had to at least put more work into getting the images that right-clicking them and saving. So if anyone knows how to get the blank.gif method of protecting your images to work with the slimbox / lightbox javascript, please let me know:)

      Thank you,
      David Henderson

      P.S.
I have also sent a message to the creator of lightbox asking if he could help, so maybe he will respond and I can post it here on the board:)

    • Geez, this is driving my CRAZY!LOL It shouldn't be this hard to place a simple protection on an image. I can't get the javascript for disabling right click to work on the slimbox popup, I can't figure out how to lay a blank.gif over top of the image..I am now trying to see if I can disable the "view background image" item from the context menu when you right click on it. I have seen that item greyed out before on some pages..wondering if it's something that a web site owner can control on his page? Anyone ever done this before?

      Thanks,
      David Henderson

    • I really don't think there is much you can do. You can protect yourself from the casual user but not from someone who is technically proficient. Other than a watermark, there really isn't a way.

No matter what you do, if I can see the pic, I can pull it out of my cache if need be.

    • People don't seem to be reading, or understanding William's posts.

I agree with him. IMO 95% of web users wouldn't have a clue how to get around the javascript, and png overlay methods.... and i'd guess 50% of people who have websites wouldn't know how to either.

Again (I think for the fourth time in this thread), we know there are very simple workarounds to all the methods. The question was not "Are there workarounds to these image protection methods?", the question was "does anyone know how to apply them to slimbox?"
