Why using different terms for Module Position and Variation?

    • Hello,
Though the club membership and entitlement allow me to test/use another template for my website during my active membership, I'm totally surprised that this is simply impossible for some templates. The name of the modules, term that is used to refer to the module position, and terms that refer to the module variation are sometimes form a template to the other one. This means that if I choose another template as my website default template, then the contents may not be loaded on the new template modules. This problem practically limits my access to the designs that I can choose, and finding the right template that would be "compatible" with the previous contents is time consuming.
I always have this fear that whatever I set for my sites with one of the RT templates, cannot be upgraded easily or used by other templates.

So I wanted to suggest that RT team, sets a kind of standard for all these terms, and a classification name for templates that enables us to know how to choose a new template that can show the contents that are already set by a previous template, or at least need minimal modification.
      Thank you

    • This was the case for older templates and many times the naming convention was simply due to the intended function of that position.

For the last several...or more than several now...months, RocketTheme has introduced the Gantry Framework for templates that will alleviate this issue. It standardizes much of the template included the naming convention.

Please check the newer Gantry templates and maybe try those if you're wanting to change things around.

Well, as Ben mentioned the RT templates since December of 2009 are based on the Gantry framework and now all share the same Module positions.

However, beyond that there's really no standardization of positions from template to template, or between providers.

This has always been the case and is just a matter of, after installing a new template, moving your content from the old positions (if they don't exist) to the new positions that exist in the new template.

In the standard Joomla framework, there is 'top, ''left', 'right', 'user1', 'user2', etc...

In templates from clubs, these may or may not exist, and usually, additional positions are added to increase flexibility.

But again, if you switch between templates (RT or otherwise), what may be 'feature' in one template may be 'showcase' in the next.

What you need when you switch templates is a map of the current template and the new template, you can usually get this from the template provider, or identify the positions with ?tp=1

      Old post, but useful info....

When you change from one template to another everything is not going to preview perfectly, nor is it assigned by any form of automation. It can't be.

Not all modules and positions you have used in one template are necessarily named the same or positioned the same from that template to another. The same goes for the styling.

As an example; There is no way for Joomla! to know that you want your "Breadcrumbs" to be assigned to the new Akiraka Breadcrumbs-Bottom module position without you assigning the Breadcrumbs to that position. Unless of course, the position you had them assigned to before was named the same.

To begin you should open EXTENSIONS > TEMPLATE manager and assign any needed parameters within your new template.

Next I would open each module and assign the new positions within your new template accordingly.

You will need to do the same with your articles and any and all module suffixes you have assigned previously.

Changes and or new assignments may also be needed in your menu structure.

Module Variations: The same applies here. The module variation suffixes for Akiraka are not named or positioned the same as modules and module variations in Hivemind.

It sounds worse than it is. I've done this before... it just takes a bit of organizing and a little time.

The CHOICE of how you do this and if you do this is yours. If you have a smaller site with little content it may be quicker and more efficient to start fresh. Backup your data first and make some screen shots of how you had it before so you won't have to go completely go by memory.

Though I am sure this is not what you wanted to hear, I do hope this at least helps you to get started and helps you understand what is going on. :o
