Why do articles have to appear in the main body

  • Why do articles have to appear in the main body

Posted 14 years 6 months ago
    • I have been using Joomla for a few years now and always the number one complaint is "why are the articles appearing all the way down on the page?" The complaint is rather simple to see and I do understand the feedback. Rockettheme makes great templates with many times nice showcase features such as rotators, tabs, etc. Now you write some content and display a latest news module on the home page of your site. A visitor clicks this link and the article now appears way down the page below the fold in the main body position.

Take the same link on the CNN home page and someone clicks it and the article displays on a new page up at the top where people can see it. Why does this happen and is there anyway to prevent articles from showing in the main body section. Do we even need the Main Body section at all?

      Thank you - Mark

    • What do you mean the article appears way down the page? Just turn off the showcase modules on article pages. If you click on an article on any of the demo.rockettheme.com templates the article appears at the top because the showcase area disappears.

    • That is not correct. From what I have seen the only way to control module display on a resulting article is to publish that article as a menu item. As a menu item you can then have control of the article layout and what modules appear. Just imagine a news site with hundreds of articles. Following this theory you would have to create a menu item for each article or fool around with the unassigned module position. Let say you create a section called pets and a category called dogs and then write a few articles. You have a latest news module on your home page that displays this. When you click the link the article will open up in the main body position on the home page. It would be a really great feature to control the layout of an article based on sections and categories. What is the recommend solution then to have an article always display on a separate page and never in the main body position.?

      Thank you - Mark

    • Yeah what Henning said. I always have my articles linked to a menu item (usually hidden) for this exact reason. That's what I meant. Just turn off the showcase and other modules based on the menu item for the articles in question.

It does seem inefficient on a very large site, but I've never had to build a large site with hundreds of articles, so its the only way i know.

    • Most of what I am doing is news sites that have many articles. This is my single biggest complaint with Joomla. I appreciate all the advice.

    • hi mark,

to have the links open on their own page and not inside the frontpage (with all the modules published) just set "menu-less pages" to off in the gantry template parameters > advanced.

if that does not help, maybe a link to your site would help.

    • Kat,

The following is an example of what I am talking about. You can see this by going to the following URL and try voting or viewing the poll. You will notice that whatever page you click the poll opens in the mainbody section of the home page. This is below the fold and leaves site visitors wondering what the heck did I do. On the site home page we are using the very nice rotator features that Rockettheme provides.

I did try to set menu-less pages to off but it would not change to the off position?

    • You should be able to turn that off (the menu-less pages thing). I'm pretty sure turning that of should solle your issue. Perhaps you can check Kats Gantry-trouble-shooting post to see were the problem is?
