The current estimate for Joomla! 1.6 release is by the end of 2010. Even if that's pushed back, it doesn't make sense for us to start building new sites on 1.5.
When is RocketTheme planning on releasing 1.6 versions of the templates? Are there any beta versions available?
Once there is a stable release, you can expect the following template to be J1.6 about one month after. ... Then, one by one, the prior templates will be ported, which will take 2 weeks per template on average from what I have read.
I don't think you'll see mods or team members working on this prior to J1.6 being stable.
A member with the proper skills and time might want to experiment though.

I'm no coder, but from what I've read about Joomla 1.6, the changes don't seem that drastic. Also, I would expect that the majority of the development could be done prior to the full release. Then they could just be tweaked as needed. Especially given that it's now at a stage where the changes will be minimal, and probably not effect a template in any case.
Am I missing something here? Is there other reasons for waiting?

RT doesn't release beta templates, especially on a beta platform.
I think you miss understood me. I'm not talking about releasing beta templates. I'm talking about having them almost done internally prior to release, so that you only have to do a few tweaks to get them out once 1.6 is live. Just basic preparation.
Rest assured, RT has been working on this behind the scenes since the start of J1.6.
In the posts I linked, and even in this thread, I mentioned the first template being ready a month after the stable release and the other to follow at regular intervals.
