Hi there,
If you go to the global configuration in Joomla and go to user settings you can select the level that is allocated to new users.

Yes. In your global configuration 'Settings' set the 'New User Registration Type' to Author
User Settings
Allow User Registration: [] No [] Yes
New User Registration Type: [______] <
set to Author
New User Account Activation: [] No [] Yes
Front-end User Parameters: [] Hide [] Show
