Customizing Jooma Error pages in Gantry

Hello,
I am trying to customize error pages with a Ganty template according to this:
docs.joomla.org/Custom_error_pages
However, the tutorial explains how to load the template around the error page and suggests looking for:
<jdoc:include type="head" />
and
<jdoc:include type="component" />
in template/index.php order to make some changes. These references do not appear in Gantry template/index/php. Any suggestion of how to load the template/header/menu around the custom error pages in Gantry templates?

I guess this tutorial needs to be re-written for Gantry templates since many of the code appears in com_gantry.
Would be great to be able to customize these messages to appear within the template.

This code is not the same either and I have stared and looked at, get discouraged as I only can hit tutorials in my spare time.. and don't have time to post here then...(figure I should not have to) and come back again and again...lol afraid to start...but I need to do this...it's a bummer hitting a dead end all the time...and I was pointed to these [sorry to have to say this but true]
Can anyone tell me if the proper one exists somewhere please?

- For starters, the text for the error page is in the template's language file. You can trace the location of the image, if you care to replace it, with Firebug.
