Need help with NCAA college recruiting site... anyone up for challenge?
Posted 18 years 6 days ago
Hey everyone... I have some questions I have not seen asked as of yet, at least to my knowledge... I have a dilemma... I do college recruiting services and highlight videos with a partner of mine for Division I and II athletes, we're setting up a site for this to interact with college coaches...
Basically, I need to be able to create athletic profiles for athletes with photo, position, stats, state, etc and have them categorized in new user groups for division I and division II. In essence, I need to be able to list the athletes with a profile on the site (which they pay for) and this profile will also have a sports highlight reel attached to it, or embedded within it.
Then, I need to be able to create a "coaches" user category which has access to view these profiles, and search by position, state, etc... The coaches will be able to access certain parts of the site, and the athletes will only have access to their profiles to update stuff like photos, etc.
I need to be able to email the coaches athlete profiles, special updates, etc. I purchased SM2 for this task. I also purchased the X2-Media video plugin for some of the videos needs, but I do not know if this would work well with the athletic highlight reels, mainly I will use it for college video testimonials for our service.
I tried using community builder for the whole profiling, user part of it and quite frankly I am displeased with it, I have no clue how to make it work for this task...
There will be an NCAA events calendar, which wont be a big deal, I have the component for that...
I'm going to use Versatility III template because it rocks...
Now, here's the challenge, does anyone know how I can create new user groups? Nowhere can I find this information... Also, how would I create the profiling pages for the athletes so that the coaches can do a search on specific data that they need to fill for their college program?
I thought creating a section, then a category for division I and Division II within it, then creating a bunch of content pages within those based on the athletes' stats, but then how could the coach search with ease? It would just end up being a huge browseable list only filtered by the default joomla stuff... That's crappy.
I am totally baffled by this, and have no clue how to make this intuitive or user friendly for both the athletes using our recruiting services, or the NCAA coaches...
I'm willing to pay for someone to help, or if someone can just instruct me on the components or things I need to do, that would work too. I am relatively comfortable with Joomla and working under the hood, I just don't know how to do this and pull it off well enough to compete with the other big dogs doing this kind of thing... I was hoping the community could assist me.
Thanks so much, if someone could lend me some insights I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Looking into them now... Installing JACL and yup, I have to CHMOD like 100 files! But, it's worth it if it works. Thanks a lot "Crunch" man... =) I dig that flash menu on your site dude it looks like my desktop icons in OSX. Its sweet!!
You slick like ninja! Thanks again man, truly... If JACL works, it will cure the user groups blues I have been having... So thats one down!
If u need any help with anything too, like graphics or video, custom produced audio, etc, let me know... I am here to support the community just as it does me. Thanks again!

Slide show? Even so, it's coool. Thanks bro Betougher is a work in progress but it really saw benefits from this community, so I am grateful. Ok I installed JACL and, it cured the user type problem. Very cool. Thank you man I needed that info, I was looking on joomla.org until my eyes hurt, guess I missed that one.
Now I just need to figure out how the f%$# to make these profiles not look lame, since coaches from Duke, UNC, Harvard, etc will be checking it out, it cant look like poo so I'm going to mess around with things a bit. Dude have you ever watched "Scarred" on MTV... That's messed up!

$10 p/h if I can later release the css as a freebie on my site (so it's not unique then)
$20 p/h if you want to keep it all for yourself and I won't release the code
Usually takes me 5-10 hours for both Fireboard and CB (can limit the cost to 10 hours max if you like) Includes colours, fonts, buttons, tabs etc. A lot of that is image editing for the buttons/tabs.
Other components, not sure. Could be 10 minutes, maybe a day, depends on the component.
I will be making some for colormatic and V3 in the future, and maybe more for bentobox if you want to wait. But if it's an older template (your site is sporticus right?) Then it's not on my to do list so custom will be needed.

Betougher.com is based on Vortex, and has SMF integrated. The college recruiting site WAS the Gator version of Sporticus, which was decent, but I had to switch it to the new Versatility III when it came out because I can't deny the features. I also dumped fireboard, I may use it, not sure... depends how the site turns out. That's not a bad rate though, I may need some CB customization help if I end up using CB for the profiles, as of right now, I can't find a module to do what I want, which is allowing me to create profiles for the athlete user profiles, and then allowing the coaches to come in and browse or search based upon their needs for the season or to fill scouting slots.
Basically, its to be an online scouting site where college coaches can scout athletes from their office, to put it in a nutshell. We promote unique emailing to our list of schools to the athletes, as well as being featured by our service and displayed on the site. We take the highlight reels and gametapes from athletes and produce them on both DVD and onto the website.
Right now, its a free service, not needing subscription fees, free for coaches and the athlete pays for the package deal and gets like 12 months of active promotion. It's a win win deal for both. Sure beats doing everything manually, via phone, etc...
We should do a cool promo video and make a cereal box with your logo on it... I have some funny ideas but anywho, that's the nutshell as far as the site and whatnot goes. Wow, another person who stays up all night like I do... =)

I sleep -really- odd hours. About 4.5 - 6 hours a day max.
What I recommend is something I was planning to do for another site eventually.
CB actually has a fairly flexible layout, cumbersome, but flexible and with a bit of work you can make it look like an online resume.
You could put videos (as long as they were actually hosted at you tube or somewhere) on the profile, a gallery etc. of course, and you could make the right custom fields to fit the profile you want to display.
