Joomla Hosting Experiences?

    • I'm new to Joomla, won't be doing a lot of fancy stuff, but will integrate some extra capabilities.

My question: What's a good hosting service to use? I am looking for full service -- I don't want to install my own Joomla, but (I suspect?) I'll need to install my own extensions such as Jom Social, etc. I get around okay at a linux command line, but I'm looking to spend as little time administering/upgrading as possible.

      Recommendations?
CloudAccess.net looks awesome, spendy: are they worth it?
godaddy has been a great host for wordpress, but not sure on joomla support/knowledge
hostgator I'm not sure about seems like I'd be my admin, they'd do less for me, is that true?
        other?

    • Hi,

The official host of Joomla is Rochen Host. They are well worth checking out :)

    • FWIW, I've had good experiences with both DreamHost and BlueHost. BlueHost offers live chat support, which is very nice, but they only offer shared hosting environments, where Dreamhost offers VPS and more.

After using both, I prefer Dreamhost. Plus, the Dreamhost blog and newsletters are awesome, totally worth the read! :)

I agree with HostGator (not affiliated with them in any way). 8)

When members have problems with Joomla or templates on other hosts, we often refer them to HG because along with being affordable shared hosting, they are 100% compatible with Joomla and all RT templates, as well as having excellent support.

I've never had a member complain about making the switch.

    • Thanks for all the info! Sounds like there are several good ones. The two that come up consistently are rochen and hostgator. Ty -billb

    • I have no wide area of experience running websites on different hosts, but I kind of went out of my way searching for hosting services based both in Europe and the US and ranging from cheap shared hosting to VPS and spent a lot of time reading TOS, Level Agreements etc as well as reviews.

Although I in no way reject companies that offer the "unlimited" resources in traffic and space, they are not my immediate preference. I like to have an idea of what this can mean practically. Having "unlimited" capacity and being on a server with too many users won't do me any good. Many of them even have terms setting the maximum number of files you can have (kind of stupid-sounding if you pair it with the "unlimited" advertising), others have a tight policy on resources used at any time, others enforce their terms quite forcefully, pushing you to upgrade to a higher cost hosting service. Others have weird procedures for changing hosts and preventing automatic renewals, others don't allow you to keep any of your backups in your space etc.

I chose the company that offered the most straightforward and less limiting terms I could find paired with more than adequate space/traffic at good prices both for basic services and extras (like static ip). It also offered Europe Servers and I was lucky enough to find a 50% off promotion ("50off"). The company is DowntownHost .
The website is on a Level3 network which is quite fast, I never had problems with components that at certain times consume a lot of memory (like Phoca Gallery, when creating thumbnails - of large galleries, also) and the support has been very effective and fast to pick up the ticket (a matter of minutes in vast majority of cases). When asking support, I've usually dealt with three employees there. Only had some minor complaints with one of them, on whom I happen to stumble whenever I contact them after midinight (Athens time)...he seems to read the support tickets in a hasty way and often asks for information that is given in the first message (for me repeating is tiring, but then again I do write lengthy texts).

DowntownHost offers Cpanel and Softaculous, which makes the whole business of installing software very easy.
However, if you require such personalized service like having Joomla installed for you, you might have to get it at an extra cost.

    • (1) Host Gator
      (2) Rochen
      (3) Blue Host

I can't recommend against Go-Daddy, although I have had SOME issues with them. If you plan on running a DB-Query-heavy-site on shared hosting account, then you might want to consider upgrading to a dedicated IP Otherwise you will experience some serious lag and sluggishness during peak hours. Also, i wouldn't rely on G-Diddy's staff to be much help if you get into some "other-than-basic" server issues.

Finally, G-daddy isn't that bad for reselling.... because almost everyone has heard of them and are ok with using them!

    • Just had a DOH! moment this morning.

Doing some maintenance on a couple of sites that I haven't been to in a while.

I could log into the first site's CP, but the second kept looping back to the first.

I checked and checked and spent 40 minutes or so saying WTH?

Contacted HG support and they solved it in < 3 minutes.

It was totally an error on my behalf, but I couldn't figure it out (need new glasses, I suppose).

Oh, JEM, just do xx and yy, I'll wait while you check to be sure you are OK...

      Pretty cool. 8)
