Sporticus and Joomla 1.5/1.6

I'm looking at starting up a sports blog, and Sporticus looks like it would fit my design needs nicely. However, I had a question before I buy. I noticed that it's very old (3 years) and was designed for Joomla 1.0.
Will this still work with Joomla 1.5/1.6, or am I better off trying to adapt one of the newer templates?
Also, I saw a reference to a bonus Sporticus News template, but can't seem to find a working demo of it.
ETA: I also happen to be using this for a Gators site, and I noticed that google showed up a "Sporticus Gator" ( www.osskins.com/main/joomla-mambo/commer...cus-gator/2008/05/07 ), however I don't see anywhere to actually download that.

The sporticus template was redone for Joomla 1.5. The other variations were for Joomla 1.0.
It's a nice template and will do a lot, but there have been an incredible number of added features and functionality that make the newer templates very tempting.
My suggestion would be to use a newer template as many customizations have been made much easier with various controls in the admin backend instead of needed to adjust the code.
