Joomla 1.5, 1.6, security, and your thoughts?

    • Hey RocketTheme community :)

I'm a pretty hard-core Joomla user, and have been running my site on 1.5 for probably over a year now. However, with the new major release of Joomla, I've been debating whether I should make the effort, and switch to 1.6. To be entirely honest, if it wasn't for the appealing Joomla 1.6 admin backend template, and the fact that it is said to be faster than previous releases, I wouldn't even be contemplating this.

But... My website is growing quickly, and I'm averaging 100+ new members per day. I want to develop a long-term strategy for my site, so I wanted some opinions from you guys. :) (To be entirely honest, if it wasn't for the very appealing new backend template , and the fright that I'll be in a ditch if I ever want to upgrade to a future version such as 1.7, 8, 9, etc, I wouldn't have much interest. xD)

I hear that Joomla 1.5 will have continued long term support, for about another 15 months from now. I'm one of those people who are constantly worried over site security. By the time these 15 months are through, do you think that Joomla 1.5 will be a particularly stable release, enough for me to continue using it for however long, without having issues with security? Or is it not possible to tell?

Though I don't have a simple site, 1.5 certainly does it for me. How safe would it be to continue using it for my site, even after it reaches its end of life?

Thank you for your help! :cheesy:

    • Using anything after support is discontinued is not recommended.

Personally i would wait 4-5 releases before doing anything serious with 1.6. This is due to bugs to the code itself and the fact that it takes a long time for plugins to get upgraded.

    • Okay, thanks prim. I was wondering, if I migrate to 1.6, will the changes mean I may have to recode a lot of articles and such? I use RokTabs, RokBox, and several other Rok Extensions, so would those still work?

What I'm really concerned about is having a period of downtime for longer than several hours. I've modified my RT template a LOT, so I'm worried about having to do that all over again, and then will all the same site links work?.. What I'm trying to get at .. Is will there be so many changes in the framework that a lot of things will be broken?

      Any insight on that?

    • I don't think it will affect the articles but the templates and extensions sure needs to be updated before it's ready for 1.6.

When they're updated you can download and play around with them on localhost to minimize downtime.

Btw, i haven't heard anything about changes with the links.

    • Alright, thanks Prim. :) That's some helpful insight.

I read somewhere a couple of days ago, that the core link URLs in 1.6 would differ from that of 1.5, but maybe not. Can't seem to find any info on that at Joomla or on Google, so maybe I misread or it was a mistake.

Do you have any idea when Dominion will be ready for 1.6? :P

    • I can't answer that last question but the devs are working on the conversions as we speak. 8)
