Help Making the Joomla 1.5 vs 1.6 decision...

Posted 14 years 3 months ago
    • Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to RT as a member. I started by testing the Quasar template and Joomla 1.5 to see how things work with RT templates and I have to say I am impressed with the work and uniqueness to your handy work. Any issues I have came across were easily solved by searching and reading for hours in your forums. Not a waste of time but newly found wealth of knowledge. Keep doing what you are doing!

With that said, I am heading into a rather large project that includes the regular blog type information, extensive reviews on products, services referral base etc., social network, minor advertising and a catalog base store. We have purchased membership here, jreviews - full package and all addons, jomsocial and various modules, components etc for Joomla 1.5 and Megento sparing no expense.

Now that we have tested everything and are ready to start putting things together for the production site we have a concern about the closeness of a fully functional, stable 1.6 release of joomla and being behind the game by using 1.5. The big ole WHAT IF?

Most software companies around the Joomla CMS are planing, developing and preparing for the 1.6 stable version but everything is a far cry from being complete around the community. Our concern is to be basically behind the eight ball once the production site is complete, just to work the same amount of time and effort upgrading and fixing issues as done on the start up project itself.

The push is to complete the project but I am wondering if it would be better to wait for all versions and packages to be upgraded and compatible with joomla 1.6.

Just wondering if anyone else is facing the same? My concern lies with all the upgrades and possible bugs.

Thanks for reading, thinking maybe some input from experts may ease the tension of what lies ahead....

      Cheers!
      Daniel

    • I am working on a site with similar functions to is, and I have decided to stay with Joomla 1.5 as it will take some time for all the bugs to be really pushed out of Joomla 1.6 and all the supporting components.

It is easy to transition to joomla 1.5 as you can download a migrator to do the work for you. However, since Joomla 1.5 has been around awhile it would be best to stick with them until the rest of the development community catches up.

    • Just a little note that may or not be important for your decision. K2 will not be updated to Joomla 1.6.

And Joomla 1.5 will be supported by the devs for 1½ years from now.

    • I'm not planning to upgrade my current site to 1.6 really. 1.5 does it for me, so that's where I'm staying. Possibly, in 2-3, maybe even 5 years, I may decide to move on from 1.5, but it does its job, so why should I?

    • I would like to thank you folks for your input!
I was thinking along the same but was worried about having to upgrade within the next few months but I see now that is not necessary. It would be nice to take advantage of the new section category setup though that 1.6 offers.
I also just received a message from "Fotis" at K2 talking about this very thing.
It sounds like 1.6 will or could be short lived with support for only 6 months and possible a stepping stone for Joomla 1.7. You can read more in the K2 Blog.

      Cheers!

Thank you Rich for the link and info. Sounds logical and the smartest way to go.

I have done several migrations from 1.0 to 1.5 but never with the kind of weight like the addition of jReviews and JomSocial. I am sure everything will upgrade to 1.6, 1.7 or 1.8 just fine. Personally I am not the first one to believe that every migration and upgrade will work without a hiccup and I guess that is my biggest concern with this project, its the largest I have attempted as a novice. I know, I know setup my test server and get-r-done......

      Cheers!

    • Hey Irish,

JomSocial won't be ready until next month...also that means another month (at least) to work out their bugs with ACL...

I don't use JReviews so no idea on them.

But if this project is a large as you say it is, I'd stick with proven stiff for now and just keep dipping your toes in on a dev site as you said!

Hope I helped. I remember starting a site in 1.5 and then hitting the "But I can't Use..." issues all over the place.

Yes you have helped and thanks again.
This project is really over my head for my experience but hey you have to learn sometime. I never trust that support or updates will always be there and try to plan ahead. Hence the reason I started this thread. Plus the concern of a short lived job-well-done if we needed to upgrade asap. I see that 1.6 is a moot point "IMO" and we are moving forward.
Still, the thought of having to upgrade to 1.8 or whatever in the next 15-24 months or so is making my teeth hurt now....
The good thing is I have the experts here should I run into any issues :D and the same with the dev's for the other components.

      Cheers!

    • Irish...Be patient....

Your project is well served in 1.5x...

Let things run their course and don't jump on the "I Want It Now" bandwagon and you'll be OK. You've already said you've moved sites from 1.0x this won't be much different one the kinks are worked out in 6 months or so!

BTW..is that NY Irish or Erin go Bragh Irish?
