    • On SMF does anyone know how to make it where people can't cuss on my boards. I know this may seem funny to some people but I am old fashioned and raised in this manner and I want this on my board. Any help would be appreciated.

Nothing funny about that Bradley, I'm sure most of use were raised in that manner. Sad that vile language has become so commonplace that is is now considered normal.

      Have a good day.

    • lol - now ashamed to admit we once set up an smf board that used the censored words to change normal words into rude ones ::) We hardly ever used it until one day some of us wanted to use the board to chat over some private stuff and had forgotten about this feature and took me ages to work out what the others were saying and why they kept referring to various bodily functions :-X

    • What exactly makes a word vile or rude?

The meaning of the word? Because different words can mean the same thing but one is acceptable and one is not.
The sound of the word? Well there are lots of words that sound almost identical to certain cuss words.

Is it just that we are raised to think 'x' word is a cuss word? After all I can swear using the most horrific Japanese language and you won't bat an eyelid if you don't realise it's a 'swear word'.

It seems that it is not until you understand a word that it becomes bad. Does that mean that you should censor yourself? After all it is you who makes them into swear words.

Why is it that some words are so bad? They are just a sound after all...

I am not being a smart ass here by the way, I am genuinely curious.

Funny. I've thought the same thing. I guess we assign an emotion to words and that's what makes them "bad words". I've been on the receiving end of some words considered bad and it doesn't bother me. It speaks more to that person's ignorance than anything else. (By the way, if you see me walking out of a gay bar, don't assume I'm weak and feminine. I'll still kick your ____. Well.... I might not be any match for Daniel's mad ninja skills, but for 90% of the rest of the world....)

It kind of reminds me of one of my favorite shows, The West Wing. Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits are in a presidential debate and Alda keeps referring to Smits as a "liberal". Smits turns it around and says something to the effect of "THat's what I am and you can try and demonize that word and drag it through the mud all day long and I'll GLADLY pick it up off the floor and wear it as a badge of honor. No matter how much you try and make that a nasty word, it's who I am and I don't apologize for it."

That's just kind of the way I think, I suppose....

Glad I'm not the only one who's thought about what makes a word bad....

    • I ask it because I have a had a few discussion with different people about what constitutes an 'insult' and being insulted is 100% purely the responsibility of the person receiving.

It can only affect you if you let it.

I feel the same way with swear words. None of them bother me in the slightest. I try not to use them though, because I know they offend some people, but I don't feel at all uncomfortable when other people use them.

Not sure this the thread to discuss it though lol.

p.s. At least someone finally acknowledges my skills! I would give you a free gift if I had anything worth giving. :D

p.p.s If I see you walking out of any bar, I will turn you around and send you back in with orders to drink more. You are only allowed to crawl out of bars. :D

    • I don't think its the word - I think its the intention - thats why you can use swear words around friends and noones that bothered but in a different context the words become really offensive.

Then again I've met loads of people who get hung up on words and they really annoy me - to the point you say something clearly with one intention but because of the word used they make out you meant something else - this happens a lot with us because we travel about working with people from all sorts of different areas. Then theres the classic differences - for months I never knew why I'd get booted out of chat rooms for saying "I'm just popping out for a fag'! - meaning I'm off for a cigarette, but apparently not meaning the same thing to the American Moderators!!

    • to me,, the responsibility never lay with the speaker, but instead, the listener ( in this case, the reader)

free speach is just that, free speach,,, it is up to the listener to decide what they choose to hear or read. but sadly we live in a world of whimps that feel they have a right to not have their feelings hurt and that words need to be banned.

      sad
