What exactly makes a word vile or rude?
The meaning of the word? Because different words can mean the same thing but one is acceptable and one is not.
The sound of the word? Well there are lots of words that sound almost identical to certain cuss words.
Is it just that we are raised to think 'x' word is a cuss word? After all I can swear the most horrific Japanese language you and you won't bat an eyelid if you don't realise it's a 'swear word'.
It seems that it is not until you understand a word that it becomes bad. Does that mean that you should censor yourself? After all it is you who makes them into swear words.
Why is it that some words are so bad? They are just a sound after all...
I am not being a smart ass here by the way, I am genuinely curious.
Funny. I've thought the same thing. I guess we assign an emotion to words and that's what makes them "bad words". I've been on the receiving end of some words considered bad and it doesn't bother me. It speaks more to that person's ignorance than anything else. (By the way, if you see me walking out of a gay bar, don't assume I'm weak and feminine. I'll still kick your ____. Well.... I might not be any match for Daniel's mad ninja skills, but for 90% of the rest of the world....)
It kind of reminds me of one of my favorite shows, The West Wing. Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits are in a presidential debate and Alda keeps referring to Smits as a "liberal". Smits turns it around and says something to the effect of "THat's what I am and you can try and demonize that word and drag it through the mud all day long and I'll GLADLY pick it up off the floor and wear it as a badge of honor. No matter how much you try and make that a nasty word, it's who I am and I don't apologize for it."
That's just kind of the way I think, I suppose....
Glad I'm not the only one who's thought about what makes a word bad....
