How do I edit my homepage OFF the live site?

I'd like to edit our homepage off our live site (probably in a sub-directory) and then, when it's ready, bring it into the live site. Problem is, I don't really know how to do that. Do I need to copy my entire site to the subdirectory, then change the homepage, then copy it back over the original? Or is there a way to only edit the homepage, save it via mySQL, then install it in the live site?

Hi,
If you are not currently using Akeeba Backkup PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE
get it, install it, and use it. You can also get and use the "Remote" application for automating the backup process and storing backups on your on computer.
OK to answer your question. If you update the com_content database table for your home page article it will update your site use as if you use the article editor. I would suggest one of the following two options.
1) If you are talking about the article only, get firebug and use it to do your test editing. Once you are confident that you can get the look you want, then edit the actual article.
2) If you are wanting to change the module assignments, overall page layout or more, then make a backup copy of your site and install it in a sub directory of your server. This is easy using cPanel to just move or copy the the backed up site to the development subdirectory. Make your changes and then either delete the live site and replace it with the modified back up or just make the adjustments to your live site once you are sure on the new look.

Thanks for the advice, cdavis411. I do have Akeeba Backup, and I do use it; thank you for making sure, it's great advice. I don't completely understand #1, but I don't think I need to as #2 applies to my situation: I am doing a complete revamp, including module changes, overall layout, etc. I will copy the entire site over, as you suggest.

I copied the entire site over to a directory named "dev" and also copied another version of our mySQL database in Control Panel. So everything should be set to duplicate, right? But now when I try to access:
www.dev.zionadventures.com
it automatically redirects to:
www.zionadventures.com
Any idea why it's doing this? Is there a configuration setting I'm missing?
Related, I am able to log in as the administrator in www.dev.zionadventures.com/administrator , which tells me the site has been successfully duplicated. I just can't access the front end.

When you manually copy a site and DB there are several edits you have to make to point to the right sub domain or sub folder of your site.
The reason your copy is pointing to the old site is because you haven't made the necessary edits (in the configuration.php, etc.).
If you use Akeeba to make a backup of your site and then install the backup to a sub domain or a sub folder, all the path configurations will be changed automatically. - Thanks,

All you have to do to deploy your akeeba backup file is move a copy of the backup to the subdirectory and upload kickstart.php (from Akeeba) then browse to the subdomain or folder and tail the url with /kickstart.php
Of course you will need a new empty MySQL DB for the new site to dump into. The install or deploy process takes about 10 minutes (once you have gotten used to it)
