    Vanilla Forums

Posted 14 years 1 month ago
    • Has the RocketTheme crew seen or heard of Vanilla Forums ?

Every once in a while I get the urge to check out different web software, particularly forums, and I found Vanilla through the forummatrix.org website.

All I've got to say is... wow. I really only switched to phpBB3 (from Simple Machines) because RocketTheme offers such great matching templates. But in that switch away from SMF, I've greatly missed the "modern-ness" of it. phpBB3 just feels... dated and flat. Web 1.0. Vanilla "feels" like Web 2.0 (I realize that's just a lame buzz-word but it fits in this case).

I've been tinkering with Vanilla for about two hours now and it is EXTREMELY refreshing. It feels clean, modern, and has some really great features to it. It also takes a new spin on the forum layout which I am really surprised by. It is a lot more intuitive and streamlined. I'm honestly really surprised as how much I like it. I used their phpBB3 -> Vanilla converter and it worked flawlessly.

With RocketTheme's excellent Gantry framework doing really slick and smooth website experiences I can't help but feel like Vanilla Forums would be a ridiculously good companion.

This post is basically a desperate plea for the RT team to at the very LEAST take some time to experience Vanilla Forums and consider the idea of creating themes for it.

Just my 2 cents. Keep up the amazing work RocketTheme, I am/was a customer of most of your template clubs and I love your work!

    • Thanks for the info. I had actually looked at vanilla as an option for the RT forums some time back but the lack of segregated forums and the reliance on tags was a bit of a show stopper. I'll have to check out the 2.0 version to see how far it's come.

    • The default template shows a list of the most recent posts regardless of the category it's posted in, but the actual category list is on the right hand side. I really like the way you click "New Post" first and THEN pick the category you want it to post in. It makes it easier to just get something posted rather than click-digging through various sections and categories.

    • I don't want to be spammy and make a new thread but apparently Penny-Arcade.com, a hugely popular webcomic/community has switched to Vanilla Forums from vBulletin. I've got to say, it seems to be doing awesomely with such a large scale setup. We're talking thousands upon thousands (and even millions) of posts.

While phpBB used to be the cream of the crop back in the day, it's fallen behind. And it's certainly not the easiest to use when it comes to theme/plugin management. I truly think RocketTheme should give Vanilla Forums, or ANY modern message board software a look.

    • i really really hate to bring back the dead like this but i'd love to see some rockettheme magic for vanilla forums, I can integrate it into my wordpress site and theme it that way, but i'd much rather have it as a stand alone installation with it's own themeing options...

as always, keep up the good work guys
